Yeaaaa! Freehold Boro was named the 538th best NJ town (of 566) in which to live by NJ Monthly! Ranked worse than Newark, the Oranges, Harrison, Trenton, Long Branch, Linden, Elizabeth, Hillside, Lakewood, Atlantic City and Egg Harbor, to name a few. Think of the advertising possibilities! "Just say you live in 'Freehold'; they usually assume you mean Township!" "Officially not the worst town in the State!" "No Espanol? No problema! Viva la Boro!" "Dine in Freehold Boro. Live some place else." njmonthly.com/articles/best_of/placestolive/best-places-to-live---the-complete-top-towns-list-.html

yea it is. Although this ranking is based on a certain set of criteria that is not really indicative of quality of life.
The Boro has many warts, but my neighborhood is so beautiful, quiet and friendly. I think of it as a lost slice of Americana. On the 4th of July, the street is abuzz with patriotic energy. When it snows, we help each other shovel out. When a new neighbor moves in, we knock on the door to welcome them. It's a great life here in the boro. I only offer this list as an example of the less-than-accurate perception that exists.
I'll be honest. I never would have considered moving to the boro in a million years. My wife's friends bought a house here before we did. When I was told about it, my first words were "are they crazy? Freehold Boro is ghetto!"
I held that perception my whole life. Then, we visited them at their new house. I was stunned by the beauty of the neighborhood and by how quiet it was. We owned a house in here within 6 months of that first visit.

Then, we visited them at their new house. I was stunned by the beauty of the neighborhood and by how quiet it was. We owned a house in here within 6 months of that first visit. Whoa! Ka19, dude, you are scaring me! I could have written your exact post. Actually, somewhere on this site I might have written things very similar to what you did. Starting with your perception before you moved here, I shared the same before I moved here. All my life prior to living here, I had heard this was nothing more than another Asbury park, Long Branch, or Keansburg. When I was house hunting I was living in long Branch at that time and I wanted nothing more than to get out of that urban environment. I thought that was what Freehold was and could not have been more wrong. When the wife and I first looked at the house we now live in, we walked away at first because it was in the Borough. Our agent showed us some more houses over time in this town and we realized this was a very good place. We looked at our house again, because we liked it, and put in an offer. At the time we even made our agent drive us through the not so nice sections of town and they were not what we expected. My areas has always been a very good place to live. Low crime, if any, good people and neighbors and the peace and quiet we like. I recall asking a neighbor about crime and he had to think long and hard before he recalled years ago having a garden hose taken from his house. I thought, that's it? That is far from a crime problem. You also mention the people here. I have been very fortunate to have met many people in our town and I agree that we have some very good people here. There is no question about that. When ever I find someone looking for a good place to live, I always recommend this town. My area is very good for those looking for starter homes in a good area. That negative perception of the borough is often the very reply I get. It is sad. That ranking list is bunk as far as I am concerned. Just looking at it and seeing the other towns I am familiar with tells me that it was written without really understanding those towns. The sad part is that it is now a public record that many will see and continue to feed the very undeserving reputation we have. EVERY town has it's warts. We will always have ours, but it is a shame that we continue to get kicked in the teeth at every turn. I will end this as a dig into a very large percentage of our residents. Where were you during the town hall meeting? We should have packed that room. We didn't and that reflects our town poorly as well. We should have been able to show much more pride in our town.

maybe its me, but KA-19's last 2 post are schizophrenic, Bash and Praise? Which street is the 7/4 patroitic street you talk of? I know a bunch of immagants that are interested in cultural exchange with you. Desean vivo el revoluciĆ³n americana y las 13 colonias! In that case, it's a secret! Cinco de Mayo is an entirely different story.

Yea, I should attend town hall meetings just to know the business of the town. I wasn't singling you out, Ka19. Just making a general observation from the meeting. As I wrote elsewhere, many of us who were there were surprised at the low turn out. Beyond that, if you do not attend meetings, do so! You will not regret it. Many of the council people and BOE are very accessible. You will also meet many others along the way who are interested in helping this town in good ways. Getting people interested and participating in this town is the one goal I had always hope this site could help in.

That's just downright depressing Okay -- Freehold has certainly suffered some indignities, but this ranking is absurd. Show of hands: Who would rather live in Sayreville instead of Colts Neck? Sayreville 283 Colts Neck 305 That makes this entire study worthless!
