FREEHOLD — Freehold Elks Lodge 1454 says it raised about $3,000 at the barbecues it held during the borough's Kruise Nights held on the last Thursdays of May, June, July and August.
"Much of that money was distributed to the families of N.J. troops killed in action or severely wounded," Patricia Hamilton, a member of the Women's Auxiliary and spokeswoman for the lodge, said in an e-mail message.
In the year's final Kruise Night on Aug. 30, the lodge had its best turnout, raising $1,500, she said.
The lodge also supports the annual New Jersey State Elks Association Army of Hope Picnic, which was held Sept. 16 at Lacey Elks Lodge and raised more than $100,000. All of that money is designated to New Jersey families of troops killed in action or severely wounded, Hamilton said.
The borough sponsors the Kruise Nights, which have classic cars on display, through the Freehold Center Partnership, an economic development organization. The events are intended to promote the downtown and attract people to it.
The lodge holds barbecues during the events as a way to raise funds. The lodge supports various charities, veterans and active-duty troops, and also provides scholarships for area students.
Upcoming fundraisers take place at the Freehold Elks Lodge, 73 E. Main St. in Freehold:
Psychic Fair, Friday. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Readings are from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $10, and readings are $10. Complimentary refreshments are included. Contact Patty at (732) 685-9493 for more information.
Country Western Dance, Saturday. 7:30 p.m. to midnight. Live music by the Lou Wright Band. Admission is $20. Buffet dinner, prizes for best-dressed attendees. For more information, call Charlene at (609) 758-0516 or the lodge after 4 p.m. at (732) 431-8707.
