FREEHOLD — Police went to a Jackson Street home because a caller dialed 911 from that house, then hung up. When officers arrived, they heard a woman screaming, authorities said.
Sgt. Andrew DeMuth and Patrolman Mark Garahan entered the house through a back door, drew their guns and ordered Carl Erickson, 44, also of Jackson Street, to the floor, police said.
He began to kneel down, so they holstered their weapons, but as they began to take him into custody, he charged at the patrolman, said Lt. Mark Wodell.
The 44-year-old continued to struggle with the officers, and he was sprayed with pepper spray, police said.
After they handcuffed him, he continued to scream at the officers, and as they walked him out of the house, he bent over and rammed his head through a pane of glass in the door of the home, said Wodell.
After they put Erickson into a police cruiser, and he kicked out the left rear window of the patrol car, said the lieutenant.
Police said the woman was not harmed. The nature of the relationship between her and Erickson was unclear, but she had a restraining order that was supposed to prevent him from entering the home, police said.
Erickson was charged with terroristic threats, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a weapon (a knife), resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal mischief.
He was taken to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold Township for treatment of cuts he sustained when he rammed through the glass, police said.
Then he was sent to the Monmouth County Jail with bail set at $90,000.
