Feds halt plans for trash transfer station in Freehold Township Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 08/16/07 STAFF REPORT FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - A decision by the federal Surface Transportation Board, announced in the township today, will put a stop to plans for a trash transfer station on Business Route 33, officials said. The announcement -- by board Chairman Charles D. "Chip" Nottingham at a meeting with township officials and U.S. Rep. Chris Smith -- was unexpected, Smith said through a spokesman. "Obviously, the decision is a big victory for the township, the borough and the nearby residents,'' spokesman Ryan Goodwin said. The decision was reached by the board's three members unanimously and officially issued Tuesday. Ashland Railroad wanted to build the station on 10 acres of open land just west of Kozloski Road. The site proposal called for the facility to be built near a 1.5-mile rail line, which would be connected to another line that runs through much of Monmouth and neighboring counties, officials have said. The proposal drew criticism from scores of local residents as well as township, state and federel officials. www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070816/NEWS/70816034
