In another post someone fleetingly asked a question similar to the topic title. I thought it would be a good way to start the week asking viewers and participants this question. Obviously, this will not apply as much to those who grew up here, although they can say why they stayed.
I am very interested in hearing form those of you who have moved here. Anyone can answer this question, but what is/was the attraction to come here? Fiber, Cheryl, Lybian Sybil and others, why did you move here?
Calliope, why do you want to move here?

So sad. All day I have read posts about negativity etc. Yet here is a thread that none of you answered. Should be an easy question for any of you to answer.
Marc? I know you are a transplant like me. Calliope? I know you want to move here. Why? Others? Something about this town attracted you. What was it?
Here was your chance to talk about good things in our town and this thread just sunk under many others. Good job, people.
I did not want to answer first, and I am still not going to. I will go join the rest of you and find something to gripe about. That is what the site is for, isn't it?

Brian, I grew up here. Moved away briefly when I got married the first time. Moved back 17 years ago. I have strong family roots to this town and area. Though a lot of my relatives have relocated to the Township or neighboring communities. I've always felt safe here and still do to this day. I've lived in four different homes within the borough and have never felt threatened. Freehold was and still is a small quaint village where you never had to lock your doors and always knew who your neighbors were. Everything is convenient: schools, Church, grocery store, Doctor, Pharmacy, work. Everything is within walking distance. When I relocated back to the borough in the early 90's there were 2 taxi companies. Freehold taxi and Leon's taxi. You couldn't get a taxi after 11PM. Since the Mall opened and the vast over development of the once rural twp and neighboring communities, a whole new breed of people have moved into the area and brought with them their respective cultures. i.e. Brooklyn Bagels, Goodfella's, El Meson, Clifton's, Metropolitan Cafe, etc. I remember a borough before they had traffic lights, multiple 4 way stops and massive amounts of traffic, both pedestrian and automobile. I still love the borough just not the direction our government is leading us. Things are obviously not status quo from 20 plus years ago. It's time for more positive changes in the borough.

Leelye, It is good that you answered. I am glad someone did. I agree with much of what you wrote about our town. I will answer this myself in the near future as to why I moved here. What about the rest of you!?

Well, I was born and grew up in Freehold. I've always liked Freehold, because to me it always seemed like it had this authenticity and "niceness" about it. Like a family. When I've thought about other towns, such as the ones nearby, I've always had a bad taste in my mouth, but I've always been proud to be from Freehold, because it's a very real town. Lately, I'm starting to think some of the Freehold people aren't so nice anymore. I hope that changes. FR

A manageable life in a small AMERICA city WAS desirable. Our life's savings poured into an apparent great investment in our home and a life.
So we moved here 12 and a half years ago, we liked the promise of a convenient down town. Stores and restaurants had been an affordable alternative to the mall. We also liked the closeness to the mall to.
Move 12 years forward, this is not a place I would investment in a home and chance a life.
Today the south Bronx, Washington heights flavor is unappealing. The Mayors recent comments are a stark, dark admissions of a failure to the residents who have overwhelmingly voted for him.
Freehold Boro has purposefully been overrun with Absentee landlords who specialize in rent for cash customers. Taking 10 years to address weak rent controls is appalling and too late.
After 15 months, I just taken my house off the market . The offers have been disappointing, I know there are many, many others in the same boat.
For the people born here, I love to hear your warm and wonderful home town pride. It must be so hard to face the recent failure. Be honest, the US opportunity at winning in Iraq is better than the opportunity of this Boro to bounce back to the vision your imagination would have you see.
FR, Leelye, there are many people in there 80's, with home town pride like you, living in the south Bronx still waiting to see the streets return to their childhood vision. Sorry those days in the sun are long gone.
I hate to take a loss, but it is difficult to find quality home owners who can look past the state of the Boro. The boro is not a place most will investment in home ownership.
Home purchase in the Boro is at a low.

Disappointed Resident Dudette/Dude Let us put a smile on that grumpy frown. Remember a frown is a smile turned upside down. Living in the borough makes me feel like this ;D When I hear people bash her I feel like this -- I moved here because it provided convenient, affordable housing not far from the university and yet not too close. I love all the great restaurants downtown -- The Mexican stores are great. Have any of you tried their pastries? Their bodegas are very cool -- Lots of roots and different products I have never heard of. The borough is moving in the right direction. Immigrants, blacks, white folks living together in a dreamy mosaic of love and tolerance. Unfortunately, it seems like only the screwball fringe posts here their negative feelings about the immigrants -- most people are just living and let live. That is why no one takes this board seriously. I love the borough -- The borough loves me. It is the coolest place in Western Monmouth. We are poor and middle class and we are proud. Freehold Borough -- you are a proud and diverse place. Do not be ashamed. Those who wish to go let them go -- Me and Brian dude and Councilman Levine dude -- we are staying. We will not give up on the borough we love. I bleed Freehold Borough. Casually in Love with Freehold

My husband and I chose Freehold Boro for several reasons. We love the old homes and they history of the town. We wanted to live within walking distance of Main Street where we could bring our son to the library, the Farmer's Market, the diner, the pizza shop, etc. We loved the idea of not having to hop in the car every time we wanted to go somewhere. We also found the homes and taxes to be more affordable for us and our income. Like any town, it has its pluses and minuses. But I find more pluses and I'm hoping that doesn't change over time.

My Turn......
The wife and I have been here for thirteen good years. We are not rich and are typical working class types. Meaning our income is not the best.
When we were house hunting, we looked all over Monmouth County. We wanted an old house, colonial or Victorian. That is not very realistic in the price range we were looking at back then. We did look at some houses in other towns in our price range. The old houses we looked at were either in the worst neighborhoods, or the taxes were too much for us.
Our Realtor started showing us around FB. Although a lifelong resident of Monmouth County, I was not that familiar with this town. My wife had never been here. I had always been told that FB was like Long Branch Keansburg, or Asbury Park. I have found that to be far from true.
When we were looking around this town, we really liked it. We made our Realtor drive us everywhere. We wanted to see the good the bad and the ugly. Over all, we were very impressed with what we saw. The houses were largely well kept which showed us that people had a good deal of pride in the town. We like the down town and close proximity to transportation and roads that could get us any where we needed to go with ease. Freehold Borough provided us a good central location.
As mentioned before, one factor in house hunting was taxes. What we found here was much lower than many, many other places we looked. That was a big attraction. To boot, we found this town had better municipal services than many others.
When we were looking in our current neighborhood, we saw a community that we are very compatible with. Working class people who are decent and take care of their properties. We talked to residents and found a very low crime problem in the area. We saw a good mix of people from new families to retired folks who have been here forever.
Even thirteen years later, with some of the problems that others have, ours is one of the many parts of town that is still very good to live in.
I can remember our first night here when my wife and I were on our back deck. Neither of us could believe how quiet it was here! That is what we wanted.
We liked the small town feel and the old historic charm. The unfortunate part is that we did not get that colonial we wanted. We settled for a very nice Cape Cod.
This is our home and we are happy here. I would recommend to anyone looking for an affordable house to look here. I still believe the FB is a good town with good people.

(as you and your wife quickly learned) Not only could we be happier living in our current home and town, but we're more than thrilled to be far away from Asbury Park! Lauren

Small world Lauren. I grew up very close to AP. Still have family there. Before I moved here, I spent a year living in Long Branch and am thrilled to be away from there! FB is a much better place than both AP and LB.

FB is a much better place than both AP and LB. We even lived in the NorthWest section of Asbury which is "supposed to be" the "good section". (as if, sadly, there is such a thing at this point in time) Weeks after we left, there were three separate shootings right near our old home. And another one a week or so ago! Terrifying.

My spouse and I moved here because of the quaint feel, and the downtown area. We thought it was charming and convenient for my job. Unfortunately, I no longer have that same feeling.
