The Newark Black Film Festival will be presenting additional films in Asbury Park on July 13, 20, 27 and Aug. 3:
— July 13's feature is "Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed," a documentary about Shirley Chisholm, a New York Assemblywoman who in 1968 became the first black woman ever elected to U.S. Congress. Jules Ramsey, founder and past president of the Greater Freehold NAACP, and Rainette Holomon, historian, will be panel members.
The host/moderator is Eatontown's Lorraine Stone, an actress, dancer and Asbury Park native who will introduce the documentary.
"Shirley believed that a woman's place is wherever she wants it to be — in the House and the Senate," Stone said. "A lot of people forget that she ran for president before Jesse Jackson."
"Whenever I can find a way to bring the arts to the Asbury Park community, especially for children, I'm glad to participate. That's why the film festival is such an important contribution to the community," she added.
