I live on Manalapan Avenue, near the intersection with George Street, East & West. A week or so ago, a trash receptacle, of the type that is in the downtown business area, appeared as if by magick, on the NW corner of E George & Manalapan. Today, I find that, again as if by magick, said trash receptacle has moved to the NE corner, providing me and mine with this stellar view from our front porch: More images are at: smg.photobucket.com/albums/v438/chyral/corner%20of%20trash%20and%20%20litter/Have similar trash receptacles appeared (as if by magick) in other residential neighborhoods? If so, where, and can anyone provide any insight into what the logic is behind further degrading the residential character of a once largely owner-occupied neighborhood that is already struggling mightily on the slippery slope of bad landlords and bad tenants and all that they bring to bear?

Cheryl:
I'll look into placement of the trash container for you. It's hard to tell from your photograph, but the one pictured doesn't look new. Could someone have "lifted" it from the downtown and placed it on your street as a prank?
Have there been any littering complaints on your street, perhaps, prompting a neighbor to call the Borough and request such a receptacle?
In any event, I'll look into it. If you write me sidebar with your email address, we can take the conversations off line, if you wish. Thanks.

It could be worse....they could be SHOPPING CARTS !! LOL Seriously though, did you call Borough Hall 732-462-4200 and inquire why they are there and who requested them? Leelye

Hi, it's me, Magick Garbage Can. I'm outside your house on wi-fi--it's canny--and feelin a little tan today. Please don't mind my appearance, I have been out in the sun all day and have become a little brown. Is it my color that offends you or just because I'm so square? I apologize for ending up on your doorstep, so to speak, but I was run out of town by these thugs who as you can see got a hold of my parents while I fled the NE corner of the street. They were my only family left and now they have bit the trash! I thought I could possibly lean on you (or you can lean on me) for some support, but it seems that I am unwanted. I apologize for making your house look trashy but I love it here! I'm tired of running from scoundrels and vandals. Maybe I can find another neighborhood to clean up. Where oh where..who is that garbageman in the window.... Messing you, MGC up in yo hood

Cheryl,
Good luck with your trash can issues. Was there a problem with trash and litter at that site to begin with?
I have to agree with Calliope that, from the photo, it appears that you take very nice care of your yard. I try to do the same in mine.
On another note, are you the same Cheryl who used to run the Freehold Historic Preservation web site? If so, could I convince you to help us out here under our FB history section? It would be greatly appreciated. I really liked the pictures of the former Bartleson house. It is a also a reminder of why the commission was formed.

Cheryl:
Your trash receptacle may be gone by the time you read this post.
Mr. Bellina confirmed that the Boro has placed some of these cans in higher walking traffic areas to reduce littering. While I agree with this move, we respect your wishes for a more pleasant line of site from your front yard. The receptacle will be removed.
Thank you.

While I agree with this move, we respect your wishes for a more pleasant line of site from your front yard. The receptacle will be removed. Thank you. Marc No, thank you. It is gone, and we were very glad to see it go. However, since no-one really responded to my intitial question - "Have similar trash receptacles appeared in other residential neighborhoods?" - we took the time to inventory most of the principal, high traffic (both foot and vehicular) thoroughfares that travel through residential (R-whatever) zoning, and found this: - West Main Street, from Park Ave to Manalapan Ave had no trash receptacles. - East Main Street, from Bennett St to Jackson Terrace had no trash receptacles; one was at the gas station corner of Jackson & 537 - Park Avenue, from one border of town to the other, had a single trash receptacle at Grace Lutheran Church, where there is a NJ Transit bus stop. None, oddly enough, near the racetrack, where there is always a lot of foot traffic and plenty of litter - Center Street had none, although there are several in Vinyard Park. - South Street had three, one at Post and Coach Apts, and two others closer to the center of town (the block between Institute and Union?). One is a blue plastic one and the other like we had on Manalapan. The latter was quite literally overflowing with trash, and was exactly the sort of repulsive nuisance we hoped to avoid on our street. - Manalapan Avenue, other than the one at E George, none. We did not drive Broadway (it was 5 PM), or Broad or Throckmorton Streets, feeling that we had surveyed an adequate sample of residential, high foot traffic areas. You may draw whatever conclusion you would like from what we found, or rather, what we didn't find. Cheryl, Good luck with your trash can issues. Was there a problem with trash and litter at that site to begin with? Most of the litter we clean up is bottles and cans, usually thrown over the fence into our garden, an occasional Jersey Freeze or Starbucks cup, and the odd News Transcript that has escaped its plastic wrapper. If you walk the length of Manalapan Avenue, the greatest concentration of litter is usually the grass strip between the sidewalk and curb, along the "soccer field"/dog park grassy part of the racetrack lot, for obvious reasons. I am that very Cheryl. Is there something specific from the HPAC site you are looking for? I do have the pictures of the Bartleson house.

Cheryl, I do know who you are and you are very welcome to this site. As I mentioned in another post a while ago, I liked the old site you ran. I am sorry to see it gone. As far as what you do here, it is up to you. Being that you have worked on FB history, I hope you will help us out here.
Of course, I have to ask one more thing. I hope you will also sign on as a registered user. This site is for all of our town residents and view points. You will never be required to agree with the rest of us on anything. And if you do, that is great too.
As always, keep it sane and keep it Freehold.

Having only moved to Freehold in 1994, I regret that I haven't any special knowledge of or insight into the town's history - I'm an historic architecture/general historic preservation issues person. However, if I have anything pertinent to contribute to the discussion, I will do so. Words to live by... especially the "sane" part.
