Almost two years after the pre-Civil War mansion was demolished on July 13, 2005 to make way for an office building, only a foundation and the beginnings of a second floor sit on the property at 83 South St. Todd Bernstein, once a partner on the project with original primary applicant Steve Kontos, said in July 2005 that the building was to be ready by the spring of 2006. However, Bernstein and Kontos are no longer the developers of the site. Mayor Michael Wilson said the two parted ways for some reason and sold the property. He said he's not exactly sure why. Kontos in July 2003 filed his application to build on the property under the holding company name 83 South Street LLC of 3010 Bordentown Ave. in Sayreville. The phone number at that address is unlisted. Bernstein also could not be reached for comment. Click on above link for more..........

Interesting article, as it reads to me... this property represents $2.5 mill in ratable, which this Boro will have lost two years of payment. I wonder if there was a tax abatement here and for how long? Nice that a the Petition which 900 people signed keenly weighed so heavily? And what of the American Hotel?

The big irony is that restoring the building was deemed too costly, yet they can't complete a five million dollar office building in a town with office space to spare...

No...the SAD IRONY is that the two fellows, who went so far out of their way to see the Bartleson Manor demolished will have nothing to do with the new office building being put in it's place. This will be true even though the new owners will be putting it up using their original plans.
Had the two angry partners only had their falling out prior to the wrecking ball striking the old homestead and we might have had some different owners who were interested in preserving Bartleson Manor - the only pre Civil War, Federalist Style Building in Freehold Borough.
