I just got the scoop that our Freeholders have agreed to take prisoners from Philadelphia into the Monmouth County jail because there are beds available? The county will be paid $90 a day.
I wonder if anyone else has heard about this?

I did hear about this recently. I guess the good news is that Monmouth County does not have enough of it's own criminals to fill the beds.
It is not unheard of for situations like this. As long as it does not cost us, I do not see a problem with it.

I just threw this out to see how other people felt about this. Since the County jail is in Freehold Borough, its a good idea to see if anyone can think of any downsides to this for our town.
Of course, more Philly felons means more Philly visitors to the jail. Years ago we got several complaints from the residents on Court and Monmouth Streets, when jail visitors took the bus town and got lost walking to the jail to see inmates. Apparently, there were some scary people walking around the area.
Also, there were some concerns when prisoners were released from jail, at night, and were trying to find ways back to their home towns. Some neighbors were concerned about these folks walking around our streets.
I think this was resolved when respective towns sent their police cars to pick up the released inmates and take them back home. I just wonder how released prisoners from Philly will be transported home.

Marc,
It is a very worthy post. Your follow up post raises some good concerns. As far as people from Philly getting lost, I can see that. This town is not easy to get around for people who are not used to it.
It seams to me that Philly should arrange for a bus straight to the jail for the visitors. That would be good for them as opposed to finding their way from the local bus stop.

I doubt that anything other than public transportation will be available to visitors, especially since different people will be arriving and leaving Freehold throughout the day.
I am a little more concerned about the released prisoners transportation back home and want to look more into this aspect of their jailing.

Actually, the county jail is in Freehold Township. (It's a Fun Fact! you can taunt your high-and-mighty Township acquaintances with! )

I guess it’s only fair. Pennsylvania has been taking our trash and dumping it in their coal mines for years. Now I guess we have to take some of theirs.
