"We are pleased that Freehold Raceway Mall are such good neighbors and support the volunteer efforts of our First Aid Squad," Mayor Anthony J. Ammiano said as the check was presented at the Sept. 19 Freehold Township Committee meeting. The all-volunteer squad answers more than 3,000 calls a year in the township and the borough, according to the squad's Web site. "What most residents do not understand is that the Freehold First Aid operates entirely on funds from public donations," mall spokeswoman Debra Panzarella said in a township news release. "When members of the squad met with mall management, we gained a greater understanding of the first-aid needs," Panzarella said. The donation will fund equipment such as ambulance maintenance, supplies including splints, bandages and sterile water and other needs supported by the squad's general fund, squad member Jim McAllister said. The borough and the township also donate money to the squad, McAllister said. This year, the squad received $42,000 from the municipalities and raised $130,000 privately. "But when our expenses are $185,000 to $200,000, our greatest needs become volunteers and donations," McAllister said.
