The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resource Conservation Service awarded the park commission, jointly operated by Freehold Township and Freehold Borough residents, with the $7,500 grant in June. The grant will help convert brambles, vines and overgrowth to pockets of wildflowers, grasses and beech trees in a 2.8-acre section of the park, according to a commission news release. The grant encourages native-plant use to create habitats for local species. All the plants must be useful to wildlife, either in the form of food, shelter or camouflage, according to the release. The township Public Works Department last week began clearing brush in preparation for the improvements, said Joe Ferdinando, a township resident who serves on the commission. Students including those at nearby Applegate Elementary School in the township district, will log community-service hours for school by helping with the spring planting, according to the release.
