Seven Monmouth County towns get federal funds for bulletproof vests Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 10/14/06 STAFF REPORT
Seven Monmouth County towns were among 13 central New Jersey municipalities awarded federal grants to help buy bulletproof vests for law enforcement officials.
The grants are funded under the U.S. Department of Justice's Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant program, said Rep. Frank J. Pallone Jr., D-N.J., in a news release.
The Monmouth County towns receiving grants are: Asbury Park, $4,063.59; Atlantic Highlands, $768.83; Avon, $6,000; Hazlet, $1,492.20; Long Branch, $4,550; Marlboro, $4,290; and Neptune, $18,530.56.
"These funds will allow local law enforcement authorities the ability to provide their officers with bulletproof vests to ensure their safety while they work hard to protect ours," Pallone said in the release.
Several towns in Middlesex County as well as the county itself also received grants, according to the release.
Since 1999, $173 million in federal funds has been used to purchase some 450,000 vests in more than 11,900 jurisdictions, according to the release.
