Recently, we received the annual Freehold First Aid & Emergency Squad [FFA&ES] donation solicitation. Enclosed with the donation request form, there was a message that provided a startling statistic- “Only 20% of our residents and business donated to our 2006 Fund Drive”. This astonishes me given the many new ‘McMansions’ built in the surrounding area these past 10 years.
We need the FFA&ES. I can not understand how people can live in a community, rely on volunteers, and not provide them with a minimum donation that allows them to continue to serve the community. Freehold is not a big city location, where everything is paid for with tax money. The ‘volunteer services’ provided by FFA&ES may only be appreciated when their services eventually appear on our annual tax bill.
We have lived in Freehold Township for 36 years and I am not a member-volunteer. We have, however, seen their work at roadside accidents or residential emergencies. The FFA&ES volunteers and their services should be very much appreciated. We never know when we may need their assistance.
