I think this was published. (I wrote it sitting at my desk over lunch -- and was asked to re-write it and make it shorter and less legal. I did that. This is the re-write. (can't find the original)
Overturn Plyler -- Save Dough
One recent letter writer urged schools to check the immigration of students to stop illegal aliens from stealing educational services. This will shock most Americans, but the Supreme Court gave "illegal" aliens the Constitutional right to an education funded by U.S. citizens. Now its time to overturn that decision.
The case that grants illegal immigrants the right to taxpayer funded education is Plyler v. Doe. Plyler costs taxpayers plenty of dough. Indeed, with many New Jersey towns paying $10,000 per-pupil for an education each year, the cost of Plyler is in the millions annually for some towns. Moreover, the effect of the decision is to induce more illegal aliens to come to our Country.
With the explosion in illegal immigration in New Jersey towns, and the cold realities of lapse security in a post 9/11 world, Plyler is ripe to be overturned. The chances are good, as the current Court should recognize that encouraging illegal behavior has been costly, and that illegal aliens are not entitled to profit from their crimes by receiving the rights and privileges of citizens. One need not be a Constitutional expert to understand that crime should not pay.
Taxpayers facing the massive cost of educating illegal aliens might want to consider a challenge to Plyler. The best route to force the issue back to the Courts is to get their school district to refuse admission to anyone who cannot prove lawful immigration status. If a school can turn away students from outside its district, surely it can turn away students from outside the country. Taxpayers need one brave school district. Taxpayers need one brave town, tired of absorbing the costs of illegal immigrants. Taxpayers need one school district willing to protect its assets for use by only U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants. While the political impediments to immigration enforcement are many, the votes now exist in the Supreme Court to right one wrong. Taxpayers must demand leadership and a legal strategy from the local school boards elected by and for U.S. citizens.
Contact your local school board and town council today. Tell them you want to overrule Plyler and save some dough. Tell them you want your tax dollars spent to educate those who came here lawfully, and you expect them to use those tax dollars to fight for that right.
