Group asks for time to address day laborers’ situation in Freehold
After reading Marc LeVine’s latest letter, I am hoping and praying that his PEOPLE group is really looking for a positive and humane countywide solution to the issues facing the immigrants in Freehold, the county and the state. I believe that deep in most of our hearts lies the same wish.
I am a borough resident and a member of the Monmouth County Residents for Immi-grants Rights. In my view the issue at hand is a simple one, but one that is not being understood clearly because of fear, misinformation and irrelevant rhetoric.
No one is asking Freehold Borough to shoulder the total economic burden for situations that are truly countywide and statewide issues. That is why we have contacted the Monmouth County freeholders, New Jersey legal experts and nonprofit groups who have expertise in this area.
We have formed a network of people who are ready and willing to work on solutions. All we are really asking for is time to get these solutions in place and to meet together so the solutions are agreeable to all involved with this issue.
There are many more borough residents who feel this way but are hesitant to be openly supportive. Why? Because of the angry backlash that was clearly exhibited by Mayor (Michael) Wilson and other Borough Council members at the Dec. 15 meeting.
We need to diffuse the anger, stop the intimidation and begin to work together. The council and PEOPLE have both said they want solutions and regional support.
Monmouth County Residents for Immigrants Rights has people lined up and ready to work together, organizations who have already implemented these solutions in other counties and in states around the country.
Please give us time; repeal the order (to close the days laborers’ muster zone) so we can focus on this issue and the day laborers can continue to feed their families while we work toward positive and viable alternatives.
