Freehold High School is having their annual Hall of Fame dinner on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Battleground Country Club from 6:00 – 10:00 PM.
The honorees for 2008 are:
Warren “Porky” Prest (Class of 1947) (Founder, Old Monmouth Candy)
In operation in Freehold Borough since 1939, Old Monmouth Candies, known formally as Old Monmouth Peanut Brittle Co., opened a second location at 47 Broad St. in Red Bank.
Based at its candy factory/retail outlet on Park Avenue since 1948, stocks perennial favorites like the peanut brittle that is the company’s biggest seller
Jeff Keller (1965) (Monsieur Firmin, Broadway's Phantom of the Opera)
Jeff Keller and George Lee Andrews, the only actors with major roles who have been with the company since the beginning, are marvelous as the nervous theater managers who made the mistake of buying the Paris Opera House. In 2001, Mr. Prince had them switch roles to keep things fresh.

Dr. James Klaunig (1969) ( Indiana University toxicology professor )
Dr. Klaunig was appointed associate director for strategic partnerships for the IU Simon Cancer Center in 2005. Dr. Klaunig is also leader of the developing Molecular and Environmental Carcinogenesis Program for the IU Simon Cancer Center, the Robert B. Forney Professor of Toxicology and director of the Division of Toxicology.
As associate director for strategic partnerships, Dr. Klaunig assists in the development of relationships with such entities as IUPUI, IU-Bloomington, Purdue Cancer Center, Discovery Park, Oncologic Science Center at Purdue University, the Indiana State Department of Health, as well as other potential partners.
Dr. Klaunig’s current research is directed toward two major areas. These include understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which natural and synthetic chemicals may induce or prevent cancer and secondly, the study of the effects of environmental agents on hepatic toxicity and carcinogenesis.
Dr. Klaunig currently serves on the editorial boards of Toxicological Sciences, Toxicologic Pathology, and Cell Biology and Toxicology. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including most recently the Who’s Who Outstanding Scientists of the 21st Century (2002), Kenneth P. DuBois Award of the Midwest Society of Toxicology Chapter (2002), and Sagamore of the Wabash, presented by Gov. Kernan (2003).
Dr. Klaunig has served on numerous national advisory committees, including NIH study sections, the NIH/ NIEHS National Toxicology Board of Scientific Advisors and the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board. He was chair of the USEPA Board of Scientific Counselor Evaluation of the USEPA Human Health Research Program He is also board certified in toxicology and serves on the board of directors of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences.
Dr. Klaunig received his doctorate in experimental pathology and toxicology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed postdoctoral studies in chemical carcinogenesis at the Medical College of Ohio and the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology in North Carolina. Dr. Klaunig directed the Indiana Department of Toxicology from 1996 to 2003.
Walter Earle (1955) (founder, local asphalt and paving company)
Mr. Earle was born in Freehold, he was the son of Mary Wohr Earle and Walter D. Earle. While attending the Freehold schools, he worked for various employers in the town of Freehold. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Albany. During the latter part of his four years of service, he earned the position of Gig Coxswain (the admiral’s personal boat captain) and reported directly to Adm. John McCain, the father of Sen. John McCain. While he served as Gig Coxswain, Mr. Earle received a commendation from Adm. McCain for outstanding performance. After honorable discharge from the service in October 1958, he worked for two years as a laborer for Thomas Nicol Co. Inc. From 1960-65, he was employed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Division of State Aid, where he was a project inspector. He then became an inspection supervisor of construction projects for Birdsall Engineering in Belmar. In 1968 he incorporated Earle Asphalt Co., whose first project was for Lakehurst Naval Air Station. In 1974 he purchased an asphalt plant in Jackson from Gallo Asphalt Co. Mr. Earle’s companies received many national and state awards, and in 1991 he introduced an environmental company that, with the help of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Energy, pioneered the technology of decontaminating soil in the state. He was also a philanthropist who donated, often anonymously, money and time to charitable organizations such as the Catholic Church, St. Rose of Lima Elementary School, the borough of Freehold police and the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad. During the 1970s, he was on Central Jersey Bank & Trust Co.’s board of directors and also served on the executive board of trustees for the Associated Independent Contractors, as well as on the board of directors for the New Jersey Asphalt Pavement Association. He is now deceased.

Nicy Marion Ham Russell (1932) (local humanitarian)
A graduate of the Court Street School, Russell attended Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio, for one year, before graduating from the Harlem Hospital School of Nursing in New York. She later earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Hunter College in New York and certification for social work from Kean College in Union. Russell worked for the Freehold Borough elementary school district as part of a child study team as a social worker and visiting teacher.
