The area near Barkalow & Helen Avenue was a Potato Farm. My dad and my uncles used to work at Potato farms. They rode their bikes -- at ages 9 and 8 a few miles each monday and stayed all week picking potatos -- bringing the money home for the family and sharing Sunday dinner.

That was back in a day when, men were men and women were women and you could easily tell the difference between the two.

That was back in a day when, men were men and women were women and you could easily tell the difference between the two. That was back when there were no jobs Americans wouldn't do! Dad was one of 13 -- with his two half brothers. As the oldest survivor -- we have him writing and re-writing his autobiography. It started as short as one of his letters to the paper -- but he is up to about 18 pages now. It would be a great read for a very spoiled generation.

that was also back when it was too expensive to transport heavier things like potatoes from the fertile lands of the mid-west.
There is also a good write-up on Freehold and the potato in these local town books sold in the drug store.
