DONALD J. DeSANTO, 64, of FREEHOLD, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Mr. DeSanto was born in Brooklyn and lived there before settling in Freehold in 1977. Mr. DeSanto was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Freehold. He received his bachelor's degree cum laude from St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and his master's in clinical/child psychology from St. John's University, Jamaica Campus. He was a member of the Noon Time Optimist Club and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge, both of Freehold. Mr. DeSanto was a member of NAPSEC, Washington. He was also a member of ASAH, Hamilton Township, receiving their Legacy of Caring Award. He was a member of Marquis' Who's Who and the Mental Health Association, Monmouth County, where he was the 2006 recipient of their Tony Dowling Child Advocacy Award. He was the former chairman of the Economic Development Committee and a member of the Zoning Board, Freehold. He was the recipient of the N.J. Governor's Arts in Education Award. He was a member of Psi Chi Phi Delta Kappa. Mr. DeSanto was the founder and executive director of the Rugby School at Woodfield, Wall, since 1977.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vincent J. and Rose DeSanto; and a sister, Barbara Tierney. Surviving are his beloved wife of 44 years, Loretta DeSanto; three daughters and a son-in-law, Dolores DeSanto of Howell, Jennifer and Jeffrey Glickman of Neptune, and Marisa DeSanto of Ocean Grove; a granddaughter, Jade; a soon-to-be granddaughter; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and John DeAngelis of Brooklyn; and three nephews, Coby and Michael DeAngelis, and Sean Tierney.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Township. Friends and relatives may gather at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home for the Rite of Committal, followed by his 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, McLean Street, Freehold. Interment will follow in St. Gabriel's Mausoleum, Route 520, Marlboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. DeSanto may be made to the Friends of Rugby, P.O. Box 1403, Wall, NJ 07719.
