Let's not miss the fact that one of our own is playing in the Super Bowl - Darrell Reid (Colts). Darrel and my son, Steven are friends. Darrell has set up a web site to follow his career at: www.followdreid.com/story.php?id=59Let's not forget that Marlboro HS grad, Dan Klecko also plays for Indy. He is the son of former Jets great, Joe Klecko. I have an aditional incentive for rooting for the Colts. As a graduate of Syracuse University, Indy also boasts my fellow alumni: Marvin Harrison, Dwight Freeney, Ryan LaCasse and John Thomas. The Colts also offer us Gary Brackett of Rutgers. Let's all root for Indy and when they win, we need to do something special in Freehold for Darrell Reid! Marc

I went to High School with Darrel and speak with him from time to time.
While I am definitely disappointed that this happened, it is not a surprise. For him--maybe. But I think I would be more shocked if they found real hardcore drugs, such as coke or heroin.
While no drugs are good, he seemed to only have a small amount of weed. And while I do not smoke weed and have no interest to, smoking it does not a bad person make. It could have been worse.
Still not good news, but I still think he's a genuinely nice guy and does care about our town, and that is what matters.

When you are gifted, rich, famous and only 24 years old things like this will happen. Success is often hard to deal with.
The lifestyle of a professional athlete is a far different from most of us, who work boring 9-5 jobs. They are exposed to "roadies," partying and bad influences. They deal with pain, every day, and play "hurt" when they are not officially "injured." Hounded by the media and chased by fans from city to city, they lose a part of themselves to the games they are now paid to win - no longer played for fun.
I know a few former "pros" and they have shared their stories with me - including Chad Pennington's Marshall University Roommate, Doug Chapman. Doug played for Minnesota and San Diego before a back injury took him out of the game, forever. He's always in pain, he really has no business career and he is nearly broke. Prior to becoming a pro football player, Doug was a very religious, small town kid having grown up on a farm in southern Virginia. His parents were devout and very strict. The NFL was a very different environment for him, he says.
My older son Steven knows Darrell Reid pretty well and still believes he is a decent guy, who cares about other people. He obviously made a mistake, for which he'll have to pay some price. Let's just hope he learns from his mistake; gets the help he probably needs; and emerges stronger than before.
Darrell doesn't need to be trashed by others. He needs family and community support, more than ever, and he needs another chance to go on with his life and career. Many times folks in these kind of situations actually grow stronger and end up doing more good than others, who have never gone through similar circumstances.
Let's just see if Darrell Reid, the person, wants to help himself.

Calliope:
I DO understand Marijuana is the lowest-level street drug on the totem pole, but it is STILL illegal in 2007. Just like with illegal immigration, you can't have it both ways. It's either acceptable under the law or not. No free passes for people we like. No books thrown at people we dislike. Of course, the number of previous offenses is considered by the courts and also factors into sports league penalty phase decision-making.
The legal system needs to be consistent with pot usage. So, whether someone smokes a joint as a maintenance drug between heavier drug usage or just for a quick high, we have to accept the fact that one should not be in possession of the stuff or under its influence. If a car is being driven while under the influence, this is a concern and it is why I am not anxious to legalize pot and take the legal taboo off it's use. If not, people "on the fence" might decide to begin using it. Then, we'll have that many more DUI's to deal with, in addition to drunk drivers.
It is, however, unfortunate that many needy terminal medical patients, who really need medicinal weed as a pain medication, can't get it under current law. I hope, at least, this changes in all the states. But, making a substance that can alter concentration and coordination legal, just for recreational purposes is not the best idea.

Oooh! Aaah! A famous person actually showed how human he is. Big deal. We can only hope that he will receive what the rest of us would from the court system. Then he can move on and play some more football.
We all err, and famous people are no different.

Just remember when the federal government wanted to make alcohol illegal, an amendment to the Constitution was necessary.
What happened that the federal government gained such power that they no longer need the Constitution? That is the real story.
