News Transcript
Support appreciated by former official’s family
I am the widow of (former councilman) John P. Rosseel of Freehold Borough. The News Transcript was kind enough to do an article on John’s achievements in Freehold Borough.
I would like to publicly thank the community for their support and kindness during a most difficult time in my family’s life.

In the spring of 1986, John and Connie stepped-up and helped me run my campaign for the Borough Council. I was a 19 year-old kid, and they were gracious, enthusiastic, and not intimidated by the challenge.
John managed the joint campaign with my running mate. He was a tireless servant for the Borough. He gave of his time to his family and his community. I remember him fondly, and I am sure I never thanked him adequately for the help he selflessly gave.
Thank you for posting this nice reminder of one of Freehold's dedicated citizens.

I have a favorite "John" story I usually like to tell. When John and I ran against Lynn Reich and Bill Maushardt in November of 1990, we were supposed to be nothing more than sacrificial lambs to these incumbents. However, as we walked the town - going door to door - we felt that we really connected with the residents we were meeting. Everyone seemed very enthusiastic about our chances and promised to vote for us.
One night, after hearing a few of these nice compliments and promises of support, John turned to me and said, "Marky boy - either half the people in this town are full of "bleep" or we're going to win by a landslide." Well, we did pretty well in that election, so John was about half right.
The other funny story I remember about John is when Councilwoman Shutzer got elected. That election night, John turned to me and said, "Well, Marky Ol Pal...sharpen your sword!" Turned out that John and Sharon got along pretty well on Council...
...John and Joe Copeland was a different story - AND, THEY WERE FUN TO WATCH! Their "Yes, it is, No, It's not" back and forths were memorable.
Yes, John gave his heart to Freehold Borough. No matter what party you supported, you had to realize that. May he rest in peace - he (and Ted Narozanick) gave me my start in municipal politics.

The history section of this web site is a continual archive and tribute to the people, places and events that have shaped our great town.
I believe it is appropriate to bump this thread because we have the son of the former councilman participating on this site and more importantly, volunteering his time to make the borough a better place.
While John Rosseel is a positive past in our history, his son Mike is carrying on the family legacy of bettering the borough and looking to the future.
This is a nice read, especially the comments from site participants.

Brian, I never saw this before today! I appreciate you bumping this, it brings back memories. My father loved this town and pissed alot of people off fighting for what he believed in(SEE RICH, THIS IS WHERE I GET IT FROM). I remember richs election with Peggy very much, they had cocktail parties, great signs and it was an amazing time for Freehold. Sadly, I think Rich and Peg lost but they sure didnt lose on effort! Its nice to look back and remember the old days, politics were simple back then.
Thank you all, Marc, Rich and Brian for this trip back. much respect to you all!
