Lord knows there are enough occasions where I do not speak too kindly of our Mayor or the Town Council...but one of the things that I try to pride myself on is striving to be fair.
To that end, I want to point out that what the Mayor and Town Council have agreed to do, turn over roughly $500,000 from the sale of the old Bennett Street School to the School District to help with improving the buildings and grounds, is a tremendous act of support on their part.
I want it known that in my opinion, this truly is a wonderful gift that the town was under no obligation to do. It was their building, by all rights they could have sold it off and kept every penny, but they didn't. They committed to, and are following through on that commitment, to give the money from the sale (above and beyond the costs to actually do the sale) to the school district, and the schools certainly need it.
So, as resident of the town, and as someone who is involved with the schools, I want to thank Mayor Wilson and the Town Council for their generous act.

Andrew, you are right, the council does deserve credit and thanks for this gift. Between the extra state aid and now this, the schools can breath a sigh of relief, at least for now.

wlisa, I did not start this thread so that we can point out everyone who hasn't thanked the Mayor and Town Council. For that matter, I did not start this thread so that others might come on here and find a reason why what the Mayor and Council did was not such a great deal.
Sometimes, we just have to look at something for what it is, and appreciate it for just that. Sometimes we have to not get wrapped up in the back and forth banter, the trying to diminish someone or something just because we don't agree with them.
This is one of those times. Can't we all just see this as a good and decent act and leave it at that?

I think the schools getting this shot in the arm is good. Not too long ago I was hearing about teachers paying for supplies out of their own pockets. I hope this money will be used so that they will not have to do that.

the borough left this building abandoned to decay for 5 years. now that the real estate market at its softest they finally auction this property off. how much did the borough pay the School District for the property in the first place? take look at the property deed. is this a gift or just interest paid back to the School District for a property the borough bought for a song from the School District This is the perfect example of the other point I made above, "I did not start this thread so that others might come on here and find a reason why what the Mayor and Council did was not such a great deal"I guess some things will never change...on either side of the aisle.

I wanted to bring this topic back up, briefly, because I was at the workshop meeting a couple of weeks back, and I was hoping to stand up and formally thank the Mayor and Council...but I had forgotten the way a workshop meeting works, and I was not there for the public comment portion of it.
All the same, my opinion remains the same.
