Four candidates are running unopposed for re-election to the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education in the April 17 school election.
The district has eight sending municipalities and operates six high schools that have a total enrollment of 11,800 students.
The candidates come from different walks of life, offer various perspectives and wish to serve another term on the board.
Running for re-election are Ron Lawson of Howell, Michael Wright of Freehold Township, Diana Cappiello of Englishtown and Kathie Lavin of Farmingdale.
Lawson, the board's vice president, has served on the board for six years. He said he wants to continue his service because he believes "there is more work to be done to maintain the current climate."
Lawson, who has worked in the technology industry for 29 years, said he can offer professional insights in the technology arena.
He said, "There is an opportunity to incorporate technology and use it to enhance education more on a daily basis. I feel obligated to integrate this as best as possible."
Lawson said his focus has always been on the children. He said whenever he makes a decision in terms of how he will contribute, he always asks himself, "is this good for the kids?"
Under the FRHSD voting system, residents of Howell and Farmingdale will be able to vote for Lawson.
Wright is seeking a one-year unexpired term. He said he used his first year on the board as a learning experience.
"Now that I am better grounded it just makes sense to continue," he said.
Wright, a businessman, holds an MBA from Columbia University and currently works for Altria Corporate Services. He said he brings a diverse perspective to the board.
He said it is important for the board to understand its constituency.
"We can only be as effective [as we are] if we understand our consumer base," Wright said.
As Wright seeks to continue his service with the board, he said he would like the panel to stay on the course it has set for the district's success.
"I don't believe in reinventing the wheel. We need to stay on the path and not lose focus of our kids," he said.
Under the FRHSD voting system, residents of Freehold Township and Freehold Borough will be able to vote for Wright.
Cappiello is seeking a seat on the board for the fourth time. She said, "I enjoy what I do and I get a lot of satisfaction from it."
Cappiello, who has a background in health, has been a registered nurse for 31 years and contributes her expertise in health care to the board. She said it is important for the board to have a blend of different people.
Cappiello said one of her biggest accomplishments to date has been the establishment of the Naval Junior ROTC program at Colts Neck High School.
"I am most proud of the ROTC program. I was the one who initiated and pushed for it," Cappiello said.
Under the FRHSD voting system, residents of Englishtown and Manalapan will be able to vote for Cappiello.
Lavin is also seeking re-election to a three-year term.
"I enjoy being part of the district and I want to represent Farmingdale well," she said. "Three of my children have gone through the system and I think I can foster relationships between parents and the board."
Under the FRHSD voting system, residents of Farmingdale and Howell will be able to vote for Lavin.
The FRHSD board has nine members; one each from Englishtown, Farmingdale, Colts Neck, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Manalapan and Marlboro, and two members from Howell.
