Obviously, I want to congratulate last night's winners - Mayor Wilson and Councilmen Sims and Kane. I look forward to serving with them over my own remaining years on Council.
To Ted Miller, I want to say thank you for running...for getting involved. Knocking on doors is a terrific way to meet and hear the concerns of Freehold Borough residents. The question, after a lost campaign, is simply this... What do you do with all the good will you built and the intelligence you gathered? Does it get deleted from one life's experience or just filed away for posterity? I hope not.
I hope Ted will do two things that will help make his past campaign, worthwhile. He should share the concerns of the residents, he spoke with, with the Council. Though the Mayor, Sims and Kane also walked the town, there is still something to gain from Ted's personal insights. So, why not put all political tags aside - for now- and bring forward your input. It is constructive and useful.
Secondly, I have always, personally, believed that Ted would make an excellent candidate for a future Board of Education seat. After all, he has been an involved parent on the PTO and has also been active in his own "Yellow Shirt" movement to help better fund our schools. Perhaps, this is Ted's true calling. If it is, he might consider giving this a try. It's his decision and he'll make the right choice(s) for himself with regard to his civic future. It's not my place to endorse him, and I'm not, but I just prefer for him to visit the many options he has for different types of public service.
Ted happened to call me on my cell, at 11 pm last night, from Republican Campaign Headquarters at South Gate Manor in the Township. He was celebrating Jennifer Beck's victory with others. He was remorseful that he couldn't make it over to the Dems victory party at the Legion, but he conveyed - through me - warm wishes for the victors. By that time, the festivities at the Legion had long ended. I'm sure he'll reach out to the winners, personally, if he hasn't already done so. If he hasn't - it's just the proper thing to do. All losing candidates are expected to be gracious.
So, the silly season ends and we all go forward with the business of Freehold Borough. Once again, the lines blur between all parties represented in town and, together, we work as neighbors, friends and people interested in the future and prosperity of our historic town.
