Taxes on the mind of some Freehold voters Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/6/07 BY NICK PETRUNCIO STAFF WRITER FREEHOLD -- It's no surprise that property taxes is one issue drawing voters in District 1 here to the polls. Still, only between 30 and 34 percent of registered voters across the state were expected to vote. At the firehouse on Main Street, 147 ballots were cast by approximately 4 p.m. out of 648 registered voters in this district, one of seven in the borough. Of those who did come out, government spending was on the minds of some. "I voted "no' for all the spending issues. To me, it's economics: You can't spend more than you make,'' said Rich McGackin, 56, of South Street. Standing beside him, his wife, Eileen McGackin, 55, emphasized the thought by saying that's the philosophy they use to run their household. "Obviously taxes,'' said Shelly Foley, 33, of Brinkerhoff Avenue, about what issues were important to her. "Everybody's leaving New Jersey.'' In addition to taxes, Foley said education and stem cells were important. The ballot question on stem cells was important to Betty Woods, 55, of Jerseyville Avenue. Also, she explained why she votes. "For one thing, my ancestors had to fight to be able to vote. They were denied. That's one of my main reasons,'' said Woods, an African American. The polls are open until 8 p.m. www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071106/NEWS/71106062
