Giuliani stumps for 12th District candidates Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/1/07 BY LARRY HIGGS COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU
Post Comment MANALAPAN — GOP presidential hopeful and former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani made a date with more than 300 of the party faithful to meet in February and win the Republican presidential primary in New Jersey.
Giuliani, who came to The Excelsior banquet hall to boost the District 12 state legislative campaign of Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck, running for Senate, and Assembly candidates Caroline Casagrande and Declan O'Scanlon, said he wants a hat trick - a GOP victory in New Jersey in Tuesday's election, followed by the primary in February and winning the White House next November.
The cornerstone is a Republican victory in New Jersey next week, Giuliani said, as he hit on GOP touchstones such as lowering taxes and creating a more business friendly climate to create jobs.
"You have the candidates that will do it, and you've got to get them elected,'' Giuliani said of Beck, O'Scanlon and Casagrande. "We're not always perfect, but when we do what we do best, we give people more freedom and more opportunity.''
Giuliani was interrupted several times by spontaneous applause and chants of "Rudy," and he stayed afterward to sign campaign signs, books and even a baseball.
Hunter Avallone, 9, of Monmouth Beach was one of the lucky people to have Giuliani sign his copy of the former mayor's book.
"He was good,'' Avallone said. "I like everything (he said).''
Avallone said Giuliani inspired him.
"I would like to run for office,'' he said.
His parents, Michael and Tara Avallone, also were impressed.
"He was beautiful. He speaks for business, and he speaks for people,'' said Michael Avallone, who added this was his first time hearing Giuliani speak live. "If he can do what he did for New York City, America will be a better place.''
Giuliani looked ahead to the Feb. 8 New Jersey presidential primary, telling supporters that is the next goal to work toward.
"For the first time, in a long time, New Jersey has a say,'' he said, pledging to keep a campaign office open in the state after the primary and to run a real campaign here.
