Mayor Wilson made an announcement at tonights council meeting that he will not seek re-election this year. He has served as Mayor since 1985.
This ends months of speculation that he would not run again and opens the door for a new and yet unnamed Dem candidate to step up. The question now is, will the Dems have a fresh face or use a recycled name?
If the republicans get their act together, it could be an interesting year.

Now that the shock has worn off, the news of the mayor retiring is certainly big news for this town. For many of us we do not remember another mayor because we have not been here forever and a day. It would be both easy and tempting to evaluate the many years Mayor Wilson has served. There have been many success and failures and a great discussion could surround that. For now, I think it is time to avoid that. Like many readers, I have met the mayor and, at heart, I do believe he is a decent guy who does care about Freehold. With that in mind, I repost a link from this site. It is a write up from the mayor, in his words, about his perspective on the borough and the challenges he faced. Please take the time to read it. freeholdvoice.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mayorandtowncouncil&action=display&thread=4973Mayor Wilson, thank you for your service.

I think this is a great time to Thank and applaud the mayor! At times, we all have disagreed, we have been on opposite sides, in the end, we all want whats best for Freehold Boro! Mike has dedicated himself to this town, his years of service and dedication are second to none. IMHO, no matter what party you support, the right thing to do know is say Thank you Mike Wilson!
With all that being said, I agree with Brian and this should make for a very interesting upcoming election. Let me be the first to say, I sincerely hope there will be no recycled names from either party for this position. If you ran in recent years and the people of Freehold didn't support you, give someone new a chance. I don't know what direction the republican party will go, I certainly hope the democrats allow Jaye Sims to have a chance at it. To me, Jaye is one of the realist politicians I have ever seen, he has pure intentions and would make an excellent mayor! I also believe in John Newman, not sure if he would want to make that move but John to me, is similar to Jaye and too would make a wonderful mayor! Seems like theres some exciting and positive days ahead!
Again, Thank You Mike Wilson!

Can I just say...that even from all the way on the other side of the globe...and even though we know that this is a 'right wing - malcontent' web site...the absolute SILENCE on this particular thread is unbelievably deafening

Even the other local Freehold sites had little chatter about this. We are in the world of facebook now. But don't worry, as time goes on and we get closer to election, I will have plenty to say and it will be advertised on facebook. ;D
