The “We the People” bookshelf collection contains books for children from kindergarten through high school, as well as material for adult audiences. Some of the titles have Spanish-language editions as well. “The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns,” the acclaimed nine-part epic documentary, is included in the collection. The award is part of the NEH’s “We the People” initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study and understanding of American history and culture. Selected public and school libraries in all 50 states each will receive the collection. Since 2003, NEH and ALA have distributed 17,000 “We the People” bookshelf grants to school and public libraries across the country. The Freehold Public Library will present a variety of specific programs based on the “A More Perfect Union” theme, as well as incorporating the material into existing programs and collaborative efforts. The collection will be available for library patrons to borrow, as well. For more information about “We the People” bookshelf programs at the Freehold Public Library, call the library at 732- 462-5135.
