On December 5th there was an uplifting fundraiser for a four-year-old boy, Gabriel Garcia, who has been diagnosed with leukemia. This event was well advertised and hosted by the Latino Leadership Alliance (LLA). Gabriel’s parents are Anne Bagchi and Felix Garcia.
Frank Argote-Freyre of the LLA reported that the event was “a very good time and a great success” for the family. Held at that First Presbyterian Church, the night was full of entertainment that included a DJ and a variety of local musicians. Between donations, prayer bracelets and a 50/50 raffle, the fundraiser brought in just under $4000 for the family. It is expected that they will reach $5000 as more donations come in after the event. According to Argote-Freyre, this will certainly help ease the financial burdens of the Garcia- Bagchi family during this difficult time.
Borough resident and First Presbyterian church member Samantha Daesener helped coordinate the volunteer efforts that ensured a wonderful night. According to Daesener, it was a very family oriented crowd with great music that helped all people to have a good time. Samantha also reported that Gabriel’s family was very appreciative of of all the help. Samantha and the other volunteers planned on having 75 guests. They exceeded that number which was close to 100.
According to www.leukemia-lymphoma.org, 3500 children will be diagnosed with leukemia each year. In recent decades, survival rates have improved tremendously. However, treatment is a long road, especially for such a little boy as Gabriel. Treatment is performed in stages that can span several years.
According to Argote-Freyre, the Garcia-Bagchi family would certainly welcome future donations. Those who are interested may mail donations to Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey [Monmouth Chapter] at PO Box 943, Freehold, NJ 07728. Please make checks out to Ann Bagchi.
