Christian school in Wall may close 'to reorganize'
By Jason Method • STAFF WRITER • August 21, 2009
WALL — The Shore Christian Academy, the school operated by a church whose building has been foreclosed on for failing to meet its $4.8 million mortgage payment, may close this fall.
Nina Lane, financial secretary for the Shore Christian Center church, confirmed this week that the pre-kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school was closing to "reorganize." However, in a later e-mail statement Friday, Lane said the church was still negotiating to keep the school open, but with a later start date.
The school had 68 students enrolled last year and graduated five eighth-graders, Lane said. She said she did not know the current enrollment. Principal Dorothy Pierce could not be reached for comment.
Shore Christian Center was foreclosed on by Waring Investments of Clifton in July after failing to make mortgage payments for some 18 months. A last-ditch appeal was refused by a U.S. bankruptcy judge on Aug. 10.
Pastor G. Dewey Friedel said then that the church expected a large donation that would satisfy its creditors. Lane said this week she has no further information on that donation, but the church is attempting to negotiate an arrangement with Waring.
Waring now holds the new deed on the 15-acre property that includes the church, the school, a professional-quality baseball field and other facilities.
Waring has not responded to calls for comment. The company has not yet moved to evict the church, the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office said this week.
