Back a couple of years ago, I wrote about the following incident on this site. I just posted this on the SPOOKTACULAR facebook page and figured I would share it here again.
A true SPOOKTACULAR story
Most years I end up working the day of the haunted wagon ride. A couple of years ago, I actually had off so the wife and I decided to volunteer as ghouls for the haunted wagon rides.
We were very simple in our "act." She was a zombie and I was a demon/devil. I had shaved my head completely bald for the event. On the morning of, I applied my red and black make up, the glue on horns, and blackened my goat tee. Just as I was doing the final touches, the door bell rang ( nuts, really bad timing!).
For some reason, I went out my side door to greet the visitor at my front door. By doing so, I approached the person from his back. It was a lone man standing there. I politely asked if I could help him. When he turned around, he darn near jumped out of his skin and his eye balls grew to the size of soft balls. He did jump off my front porch pretty quick.
The man handed me a copy of 'Watch Tower" and stated "here, you really need this" as he had a very startled look on his face. (ah..a Jehovah's witness!) He then turned around and bee lined it down my drive way. ( don't they usually stay and talk... a lot? ) If I had a camera, it would have been a true Kodak moment.
We did not scare anyone else that day, but we know we got that one! And of course, we now keep a devil mask next to the front door. And being that it is election season and we will soon have pesky politicians on our door step, we have a George Bush mask for the Democrats and a Bill Clinton mask for the republicans.

In a previous post in this thread I mentioned that SPOOKTACULAR has a facebook page. There are many Freehold based groups on Facebook. The SPOOKTACULAR facebook group has grown a great deal in a very short period of time. No other Freehold based group has done as well. I view this as a reflection of just how popular and successful the SPOOKTACULAR events are in this town. People love it! IF you are a facebook user, look up this group and join.

As reported on Freehold in New Jersey, someone vandalized scaredows! ......... The news probably hit Manny Rivera the hardest: Several of the decorative scarecrows placed around town this month were damaged by a man allegedly offended by what he perceived to be their religious undertones. "To steal away something from the kids...really upsets me the most," said Rivera, who for the first time this year chaired the borough's scarecrow committee. The committee is responsible for the town's annual contest and for placing scarecrows created by local businesses and organizations throughout town. But it seems not everyone is a fan of Rivera's work. On Tuesday, police arrested a Millstone man they say pulled three scarecrows out of the ground at the corner of Broad Street and Manalapan Avenue and proceeded to stomp on them. His reason? The scarecrows, which were attached to frames that resemble crosses, offended him because Jesus died on the cross, according to Freehold Police Lt. Mark Wodell........... " This story has a happy ending, though. read the whole story and comments at..... freehold.injersey.com/

Now that the bad news of vandalized scarecrows is posted, here is a link for a terrific write up from the News Transcript...... newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2009/1021/front_page/049.htmlAlso, I had mentioned the great interest in the SPOOKTACULAR facebook group. For those of you who have accounts on facebook, make sure and become a fan of the SPOOKYACULAR page. They are 11 short of hitting 300 fans which makes them one of the most successful facebook freehold based groups.

What a nice ending to a sad week with the scarecrows being vandalized! to all the people that worked hard to put the spooktacular together, it was a very nice event! Great weather, well organized, just a great day! Hats off to the fine people involved in the spooktacular! see, im not always negative! Who says your negative? You joined the site in the midst of silly season and are quite normal. It is natural for people to get passionate this time of the year. It's sort of like the world series- GO YANKEES!. Once silly season is over, we all cool down and go back to normal. And normal for this site means talking about all the great things in the borough such as SPOOKTACULAR. Speaking of the scarecrows that were vandalized, the people who were hit all bounced back quite well, a reflection of true borough spirit. I wish I wasn't working and could have been at the parade. The weather was beautiful and they certainly deserved that after the lousy weather last week end. I have heard tons of great feedback from many people that the parade was wonderful.

A couple of updates- I mentioned the success of SPOOKTACULAR on facebook. They broke the three hundred mark with no problem!
Also, some of you may recall resident Antonia who had won a ribbon at the county fair with her friend Casey. Antonia must have a very creative mind because she won first place for her scarecrow.
