FREEHOLD — Summer in Downtown Freehold means the opening of outdoor cafes and eateries, people strolling through town, and three other favorites — Kruise Nite, Freehold Idol and the summer concert series.
Kruise Nite will see the streets of Freehold Borough come alive with beautifully maintained and restored classic automobiles. Kruise Nite will be held on May 28, June 25, July 30 and Aug. 27.
The event will be celebrating its 20th year in Downtown Freehold, adding a special flair to the streetscape of Main Street.
The event that was started by the Freehold Kruisers car club is now sponsored by the Route 33 Car Wash in association with Downtown Freehold.
The Freehold Center Partnership, which has sponsored Kruise Nite for years, is rebranding itself as Downtown Freehold as it launches a new Internet website, downtownfreehold. com, according to Richard Gatto, the CEO of Downtown Freehold.
Music and the aroma of ethnic foods fill the downtown streets on Kruse Nite, as visitors to the borough enjoy popular oldies music and examine the vehicles that represent eras gone by.
Downtown Freehold also offers a venue for would-be singers with its third annual Freehold Idol event held on Wednesdays during June, July and August.
Beginning at 7 p.m., talented singers between the ages of 15 and 27 are given the spotlight to show off their vocal abilities in a singing contest that draws contestants from all over the state.
The singers are judged and advance in the competition. A Freehold Idol will be crowned later in the summer.
The summer concert series will return to the Monmouth County Hall of Records parking lot every Thursday beginning July 2. The music begins at 7:30 p.m.
The music of the Beatles will be performed by the Remnants on July 2.
Fans of Billy Joel will enjoy his music as performed by The Stranger on July 9.
Local band Mission Dance will perform popular music on July 16.
The music of U2 will be performed by U2 Nation on July 23.
Guests can rock to the music of Elton John as performed by the group Yellow Brick Road on Aug. 6.
The Nerds will return to Freehold Borough with their high energy show on Aug. 13.
The music of the Four Seasons as performed by the Jersey Four will be in the spotlight on Aug. 20.
"All of the concerts are designed to be family oriented," Gatto said. "They are generational in scope and are designed to showcase talent and expose the beauty and the true experience of Freehold Borough."
Gatto also spoke about the long-running Kruise Nite, stating that with the new sponsorship of the Route 33 Car Wash, there will now be even more classic cars showcased on Main Street.
He said the Freehold Idol competition, which is "back by popular demand," has been moved to the Monmouth County Hall of Records promenade due to increased attendance.
"This event showcases the unbelievable talent of residents of Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Howell, Marlboro, Manalapan, Jackson and many surrounding towns, even as far as northern New Jersey," Gatto said. "People come to participate and enjoy Downtown Freehold."
