The 135th annual Memorial Day parade will be held in Freehold Borough on May 25. Participants and those who turn out to watch the event will honor the memory of the servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives defending their country.
Memorial Day activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Elks Point (where Route 79 and Route 537 converge) with a service of reflection in memory of the nation's war dead.
Freehold Borough Councilman George Schnurr said, "Freehold Borough's Memorial Day parade has grown exponentially through recent years and enjoys a unique history … Standing on Main Street, cheering our hometown heroes as they march proudly by is a moment of American pride we should all experience."
The parade will begin at 9:45 a.m. at Brinckerhoff Avenue and Main Street. The procession will head down Main Street and into the center of town, and eventually make its way to the Monmouth County Courthouse on Court Street.
According to Alice McCobb, who has chaired the parade for more than 20 years, members of the Jewish War Veterans Post No. 359 will lead the parade. The grand marshal will be Bernard Weinstein of the Oglensky-Jackson Post 359, a World War II veteran who is a resident of the borough.
At the head of the parade will be a farewell tableau featuring a casket draped in a U.S. flag, surrounded by military personnel.
Longstreet Farm, Holmdel, has donated the horse-drawn carriage that will pull the memorial casket.
"We are grateful for the continuing support of many of our marchers, such as the Freehold High School and Freehold Township High School marching bands, CentraState Healthcare System, the Order of Hibernians, U.S. Submarine Veterans of the Jersey Shore, Never Ends Farm, the 4-H Club, the New Jersey Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Freehold Borough Little League and the Monmouth Museum, among others. In addition, there will be many dignitaries from the state, county and local municipalities," McCobb said.
It is expected that fire department personnel, service organizations, Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops and veterans organizations will also be among the marchers.
"Each year our parade features more marchers, much to the delight of the families lining Main Street to honor the United States' war veterans who fought so patriotically for this great nation. Indeed, we can never forget this day, first known as Decoration Day, to glorify and appreciate all our fellow Americans since this nation's stormy birth who gave their lives for sustenance of the American dream," McCobb said.
Heshy Moses, a retired Freehold High School teacher and coach and Freehold Borough's representative on the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education, will be the master of ceremonies at the reviewing stand.
Following the parade a Memorial Day social to benefit the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft will be held at the Victorian home of Nelson Kuperberg and David Giffler at 74 Broadway. Guests may visit from noon to 3:30 p.m. Music, lunch, games, inflatable rides, spin art and other activities will be on the itinerary for the afternoon.
Kuperberg is a member of the events committee for the Monmouth Museum and serves on the board of the Monmouth County Historic Association.
A boxed lunch is included in the ticket price for the social. Ticket prices are: members of the Monmouth Museum, $25 for adults, $15 for children; non-members, $30, for adults, $20 for children. All proceeds from the sale of tickets will go toward the Monmouth Museum's educational programs.
