This is one of those things in history that is unquestionable: the decision was good, just and great in every single way. To question it is to be ignorant or racist.
But, the decision had little, or absolutely no, legal backing. As the article pointed out, it was based on based psychology, anthropolgy and sociology.
Here is the great underlying logic of the logic: Black kids are inferior unless they are with white kids. To take this logic a step furhter, blacks are on the whole inferior. "Separate but equal" was changed to "together, but inferior."
And the school desegregation had horrible effects: shipping kids to far off schools instead of neighboring schools to satisfy quotas; and of course, racial tensions. The real welfare of the child was often overlooked in favor of statistics.
Many historians will point out that after WWII desegregation was going to happen on its own without government interference. But when you force something upon a person, the natural reaction is to stand against it.
