atlanticville.gmnews.com/news/2009/0312/sports/041.htmlIn addition to the Lombardi Trophy winners, Freehold Borough was named the Team of the Year and Colonial head coach Mark Ciccotelli is the Coach of the Year. Freehold Borough won the Central Jersey Group III championship, defeating Middletown South, 21-14, in the final at Rutgers Stadium. The 11-1 Colonials captured the Shore Conference Federal Division title for the second straight season. Nick Tyson, the quarterback of the Colonials' state championship team, won the John Tuggle Award, which is given to the player who overcame adversity, met overwhelming challenges and succeeded. As a junior, Tyson's C5 vertebra in his neck was broken while making a tackle. Just walking again would be a challenge, let alone playing football. However, the injury healed without surgery, and following extensive physical therapy, Tyson was cleared to play football again. He made the most of his second chance by leading the Colonials to their first playoff state championship and earning many Player of the Year honors.
