LAKEWOOD — Senior quarterback Nick Tyson ran for one touchdown and threw for another score, leading Freehold past Lakewood, 29-0, in Shore Conference Federal Division play on Saturday night.
The victory pushed the Colonials to 3-0 overall and division play. Lakewood fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the division.
Freehold opened a 22-0 halftime lead.
The Colonials took a 2-0 lead with 7:24 remaining in the first quarter when a swarm of defenders sacked Lakewood senior quarterback Wilton Morgan.
Tyson scored with 11:33 left in the second quarter, sweeping left end from 12 yards and putting the winners ahead, 8-0.
The touchdown capped a 9-play, 73-yard drive. The march began after the Piners went three and out.
Tyson began the series with a 9-yard pass to senior wide receiver Alex Fernandez, giving Freehold the ball at its 36-yard line.
Tyson two plays later connected with senior wide receiver Brandon Brown for a 19-yarder to move the ball to the Lakewood 44. A 7-yard burst by junior running back Tezzy Thorpe pushed the ball to the 37. Two plays later, Tyson ran for 2 yards to the 37.
Faced with fourth-and-3, junior running back Willie Thomas ran for 9 yards, giving Freehold possession at the 28. Tyson followed with a 16-yard pass to Brown to the 12 and scored on the following play.
Senior kicker Gerry Plescia misfired on the extra point.
With 8:53 left in the second quarter, Tyson tossed the ball to Fernandez, who made a leaping catch over one defender in the right side of the end zone for a 16-yard completion and a 14-0 lead. Plescia kicked the point after to make it 15-0.
Junior defensive back Damar Bivins made a leaping grab of a Morgan pass and ran 70 yards, stretching the lead to 21-0 with four seconds remaining in the second quarter. Plescia kicked the extra point for a 22-0 lead.
Brown fielded a Lakewood punt and dashed 44 yards up the right sideline to extend the lead to 28-0 with 9:28 to play in the third quarter. Plescia capped the scoring with the extra point.
