From the school web site..... June 5, 2008 Dear Parents, Guardians, and Members of Our School Community: At approximately 1:45 this afternoon, students at the Intermediate School reported to a staff member that they heard rumors about a possible impending threat to the principal and the school. The staff member reported this immediately to Mr. Ribon, principal of FIS, and procedures were followed to ensure the safety of the students in the Park Avenue complex. These steps included police notification, in which the police arrived on site within minute and the lock down of the entire Park Ave complex. Following an entire sweep of both schools by local law enforcement officials, the complex was determined to be safe. After a complete investigation a student was identified, removed, and taken into custody by Freehold Borough police officers. Knowing that the police have determined that all schools are safe, all activities scheduled for tomorrow will go on as planned. This includes the PAE and FLC field days, along with the 8th grade dance. Please note this information will be posted on our district website www.freeholdboro.k12.nj.us tonight and will go home with students tomorrow. We thank you for your support. Sincerely, The Freehold Borough Schools Administrative Team

hopefully the last word... Lockdown prompts probe Student questioned over alleged threat to schoolBy Michelle Gladden • FREEHOLD BUREAU • June 7, 2008 FREEHOLD — Authorities have questioned a Freehold Intermediate School student regarding a threat Thursday that prompted a lockdown and search of the district's Park Avenue schools complex, but did not file charges Friday. " The case remains under investigation," said Peter E. Warshaw Jr., first assistant Monmouth County prosecutor. Thus far, Warshaw said, " there is no basis to believe the threat was credible or capable of being implemented." The threat was was one of a general nature to blow up the school, Warshaw said. The Thursday afternoon lockdown at the intermediate school triggered a lockdown of the adjoining Park Avenue Elementary School, both of which happened toward the end of the school day and lasted about one half-hour, said Intermediate School Principal Nelson Ribon. He said that about 1:45 p.m., a group of students from the intermediate school reported to a staff member that they heard rumors about a possible impending threat to the principal and the school. "The staff member reported this immediately to Mr. Ribon . . . and procedures were followed to ensure the safety of the students in the Park Avenue complex," the district said in a letter to parents posted on its Web site. The police were notified, arrived on the scene within a minute and locked down the entire Park Avenue complex, the letter said. "Following an entire sweep of both schools by local law enforcement officials, the complex was determined to be safe," the letter said. "After a complete investigation, a student was identified, removed, and taken into custody by Freehold Borough police officers," the letter said. Ribon would not specify on the nature of the threat, but said the school was searched for any weapons and found to be safe. School activities scheduled for Friday were held as planned. Police take pupil into custody after incident at school June 5 FREEHOLD - A student believed to be responsible for a threat against a Freehold Borough School District administrator was taken into custody on June 5. School district administrators notified parents and the media that at about 1:45 p.m. that afternoon, students at the Freehold Intermediate School reported to a staff member that they heard rumors about a possible impending threat to the principal and to the school. The staff member reported this information immediately to Freehold Intermediate School Principal Nelson Ribon and procedures were followed to ensure the safety of the students in the Park Avenue complex, according to district administrators. The complex includes the Freehold Intermediate School and the Park Avenue Elementary School. These steps included calling police and placing the entire Park Ave complex in a lockdown. Administrators said police officers arrived at the school within minutes of being called. Following a sweep of the elementary school and the intermediate school by local law enforcement officials, the complex was determined to be safe. Officers conducted an investigation into the incident and a student was identified, removed and taken into custody by Freehold Borough police officers. School district administrators did not say if the student who was taken into custody was a boy or a girl. No age for the youngster was provided. Ribon said standard procedure was followed after administrators became aware of the threat. The standard procedure includes a 10-day suspension from school, followed by a full disciplinary hearing with the superintendent of schools and members of the Board of Education in order to determine how to proceed with education services offered to the child. Ribon praised the Freehold Borough Police Department for what he called an outstanding response to the situation. He commended the intermediate school students and teachers for quickly and correctly following all of the rules that they have been instructed on in case of an emergency. Because police determined that all of the schools were safe, all activities scheduled for June 6 went on as planned. The events included the Park Avenue Elementary School and Freehold Learning Center elementary school field days, along with the Freehold Intermediate School eighth grade dance. Freehold Borough police referred a call seeking additional information about the incident to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Amessage left at the prosecutor's office was not returned by press time. - Clare Marie Celano newstranscript.gmnews.com/news/2008/0611/front_page/008.html
