FREEHOLD — A new principal at the Freehold Learning Center is expected to begin her job in the district at 9 a.m. Monday.
Donna Johnson was the first choice of the parent, the teacher and the administrative council committees that interviewed her, according to Superintendent Elizabeth O'Connell. Three candidates went before the committees in what was the district's second search for an administrator to replace former principal Dennis Levinson, who retired.
Johnson, who lives in Freehold Township, said she has 20 years in education and has been blessed with one good experience after another in her career. She comes from the East Windsor Regional school district, where she was an assistant principal for three years.
"I feel so welcomed here. I'm very excited to start," said Johnson, who added that her goal is for all students to be successful. "I love working with children."
O'Connell said Johnson has had experience with an open-space learning environment like the Learning Center's, with opening up and establishing bilingual classes and also with filling in and working as a principal because of an illness.
"She's a good match for us," O'Connell said.
Johnson has three children: a son in high school and two daughters in college.
She said she has learned and grown from each experience she has had during her career.
"You can't ask for better than that," she said.
The board approved her hiring for the 2007-08 school year at a prorated annual salary of $102,000 pending a standard criminal history check, according to a copy of the meeting agenda.
In other matters, the board took the following action involving teachers. All hires will become effective Sept. 1 and are pending the standard background check:
Accepted the resignation of Karen McManus-Smith, effective Aug. 31.
Approved Megan Weller as an elementary school teacher for the upcoming school year at an annual salary of $40,545.
Approved Sarah Jacobsen as an elementary school teacher for the upcoming school year at an annual salary of $41,045.
Approved Caroline Comerford as a middle school teacher for the upcoming school year at an annual salary of $41,545.
Approved Irene McFadden as an elementary school teacher for the upcoming school year at an annual salary of $42,395.
Approved the transfer of Maida Cote from a fourth-grade bilingual teacher at the Learning Center to a second-grade bilingual teacher at Park Avenue Elementary School.
