Last nights council meeting was one of the best that I have attended in a very long time. I know that we all have concerns in this town and solving problems should be a constant focus, but last night we really had many events mentioned that highlight many of the excellent things that make this town a good place to be.
The Agenda Highlights[/b]
1. The swearing in of a new police officer, Thomas P. Fricano
2. Presentation of a plaque to Kevin Coyne from the human relations committee. We all know that Mr. Coyne is a well respected, decent and very active member of our town.
3. The Mayor and Council issued a proclamation honoring the First Methodist Church. The church has reached it's 175 birthday in the Boro. 175 Years! Without doubt a valuable part of our history and community.
of course there was more on the agenda, I just feel it was good to see good people and organizations highlighted.
PUBLIC PORTION
One woman mentioned the idea of a town garage sale. Something new for us, but done elsewhere. I heard many people show interest in this idea.
Al Michenfelder spoke about the new home for his club. Al was very enthusiastic and, although councilman LeVine was absent, gave Councilman LeVine a very heartfelt thank-you for his assistance.
One resident from Henry street spoke, very well, about updates related to code enforcement on his street. He reported that there was progress in the right direction on his street. I know this is a topic of interest for many residents. Some rightfully want to see more from code enforcement, but it was good to hear about some progress. This person also brought up the bike safety program and ordinances. Many people, in attendance agrees that something has to be done with the large amount of reckless bike traffic in the Boro. Complaints ranged from bikes on side walks to bikes cutting into traffic.
Another issue brought up in the meeting, from another resident is the traffic situation on Throckmorton and Main.
Council Comments
Most of the council highlighted all of the good things that are mentioned above. One stand out accomplishment that members of the council spoke of is the Freehold girls soccer team. The soccer team is having an out standing year. Even for those of us who do not follow local sports, this is something to be proud of.
Councilman Kane also brought up the recent SPOOKTACULAR events in the Boro. This event has really done well. Councilman Kane mentioned the hayrides and how well received they were by the public, as well as all of the people who participated to make this event a success. The good councilman rightfully pointed out that these events were a very positive reflection of our community.
We do have our problems in this town, but last night was refreshing to see positive things such as new beginnings, celebrations of tradition, and community cohesion. It is for this reason that I always encourage our readers to attend meetings and get involved with our fellow residents.
We are one town, and Freehold Rocks!
