COLTS NECK — Life is good for the defensive end who comes up with a fumble recovery. But it got better for Colts Neck junior John Weber in the Cougars' 16-0 victory over Freehold on Thursday, when Weber used his smarts and agility to pick up a second fumble recovery.
Both those turnovers were converted into points, but there was more:
Weber thwarted Freehold's late rally by recording his first career interception, thus ending all comeback hopes for the Colonials in the Shore Conference nondivisional game.
The three turnovers collected by the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Weber set the tone for Colts Neck, which leads the Thanksgiving series, 7-1. Freehold's only victory came in 2004.
Weber said he was merely among many on the team "determined to win this game."
"We wanted to finish a good season which saw a lot of team effort and very little drama," Weber said.
The interception of Freehold senior quarterback Brian Prisk's pass with 9:38 left in the game took the pressure off a vulnerable Colts Neck secondary, which had surrendered three pass-interference penalties and a deep holding penalty.
Colts Neck (6-4) coach Mike McArthur said, "In our scouting we saw that (screen) was one of their plays and told our kids to watch for it. It's a credit to John Weber and our defense to adjust."
The first fumble on a bad pitchout gave Colts Neck the ball on the Freehold 31, and a 26-yard run by tailback Ashton Jackson, followed by a 5-yard run by Jackson, gave the Cougars the lead.
Weber was all over a dropped lateral pass minutes later, and Eric Spillane — making amends for pulling an extra-point kick to the right — gave Colts Neck a 9-0 lead by bombing a 46-yard field goal.
