Colonials move on behind Scalgione goal
Freehold Borough reaches CJ semis
BY TIM MORRIS Staff Writer
It's the time of the season when style points don't count. All that matters is advancing. In a match that was eerily similar to last fall, Freehold Borough girls soccer team advanced to the Central Jersey Group III semifinals with a 1-0 win over visiting Princeton.
Like last year, when the Colonials marched to the NJSIAA State Group III co-championship, they dominated possession, played air-tight defense and managed to come up with the game's big play.
Like '06, it was a direct kick off the foot of Amy Flanagan that led to the game's only goal, a one-timer by Jackie Scalgione with just 13:19 remaining in the quarterfinal match.
"We have confidence in Amy," said Scalgione. "She made a perfectly placed kick. Shannon [Mayrose] made a terrific pass to me."
Scalgione slid Mayrose's pass inside the near post to break the scoreless tie that seemed headed for overtime and a possible shootout.
The Colonials controlled play throughout the match and really stepped it up in the second half where almost all of the action was exclusively in the Princeton end. But, they had little to show for it until Scalgione struck.
"We just knew that we were to come out and play twice as hard [in the states], we couldn't get down," she remarked.
True to their word, the Colonials came out and with urgency on Thursday. Yet, they had nothing to show for it at halftime. Scalgione said that the team didn't need a pep talk or to make adjustments.
"We felt we were dominating," she pointed out. "We felt we had to come out just as strong and that we had to finish."
That, they did thanks to the Flanagan-to-Mayrose-to- Scalgione score.
The defending sectional champions, now 17-2, played their semifinal on Monday at home against Monroe.
The sectional final is tomorrow at the home field of the highest seed. Hightstown, the No. 1 seed, was playing Wall. That set up the tantalizing prospect of a third game between Freehold Borough and Wall if the Crimson Knights, the No. 4 seed, prevailed in their semifinal.
The teams went 1-1 in B North during the regular season with Freehold winning the B North title because Wall had tied Ocean Township.
If a Freehold Borough-Wall match is in the works, it will be at Freehold (the higher seed) at 2 p.m.
If the seedings hold up, Freehold will travel to Hightstown tomorrow.
Freehold Borough was the only area team to survive and advance last week in state tournament action.
In Central Jersey Group IV, Howell, Manalapan and Marlboro all lost in the round of 16 on Oct. 29.
Marlboro, which made the biggest turnaround of any team in the Shore this fall, came close to extending its magical season. The Mustangs were tied 2-2 with Hillsborough through regulation and overtime. But, fell in the shootout in sudden death, 6- 5. A tough ending for any team, let alone one that had come as far as Marlboro did.
Lauren Kirsch and Harli Goldstein scored in the second half to give sixth-seeded Marlboro a 2-1 lead. But, the Mustangs could not hold it. Lauren Cusick scored for visiting Hillsborough with just 2:00 remaining to tie it and send the match into overtime.
Marlboro was 11-6-3 in what was a memorable season.
Perennial state participant Manalapan lost at Montgomery, 4-0. The Braves finished the season 11-8. The good news for the Braves was the emergence of several underclassmen who will be the team's foundation in coming seasons.
Howell rode a veteran lineup into the postseason. The Rebels were consistent throughout the season, finishing second in the A North Division. They lost to SCT runner-up Jackson Memorial, 4-1. Lauren Cadott, assisted by Alyssa Fiorillo, scored Howell's goal. It temporarily tied the match at 1-1.
