Softball Drops Series Finale 5-0 To #22 Florida

GAINSEVILLE, Fla.-- Longwood University softball wrapped up its weekend series with #22 Florida, falling to the Gators 5-0 Sunday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla.. The Lancers (19-18) were led by Cailtin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) who collected two of Longwood’s four hits in the game going 2-3. Longwood will wrap up the 2007 season with a 3 p.m. doubleheader with Liberty on Tuesday, April 24, at Lancer Field.
The Lancers threatened in the top of the first inning, as Hooe and Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) tallied back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second with no outs. The Gators however got the next Longwood batter to strike out and the following batter to line out into a double play ending the threat.
The Gators went up 1-0 off a lead-off homerun by Melissa Zick in the bottom of the second inning. Florida did not stop there, knocking in three runs in the following inning to go up 4-0. Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) got the start but was relieved in the fifth inning by Ashley Forsyth/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold). Mills went 4.2 innings allowing five runs, two of which were earned on six hits while striking out one. Forsyth pitched the final 1.1 inning and allowed only one hit.
Longwood tried to get on the board in the fourth inning after Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) hit a lead-off double through the right side and moved to third on a wild pitch with no outs. Washington however was stranded there keeping the Lancers off the board.
For the Gators Stacey Stevens got the start and went four innings allowing four hits and no runs while striking out eight. Stacey Nelson came in for relief and preserved the shut out in the final three innings allowing no hits and one walk and striking out one.
