To my knowlegde, this person is not associated with PEOPLE, but since he is a Freehold resident, I will post this.
Take action on illegals
My hats off to Lou Barletta, the mayor of Hazelton, Pa. This town is enforcing the law against illegal immigrants, landlords who rent to them and employers who hire them. The Sept. 24 Press article "Enforcing rental rules" seemed to blame the landlords more than the criminals who live in these houses.
The Lakewood housing inspector seemed sympathetic to these same criminals. When he enters a home suspected of overcrowding, does he ask for residents' identification? He said 48 hours is not enough time to clear out. Does he realize they should be arrested right on the spot? If you are doing something illegal, you are a criminal.
Barletta has drafted an Illegal Immigration Relief Act. Let's draft this act in Freehold and Lakewood (both havens for illegal immigrants), if not the entire state. Walter Cooper

......and for a little balance ,this appeared the next day in the APP {10/14/06}
TOPIC OF THE DAY: Illegal immigrants Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 10/14/06 Laborers bring economic benefits
In response to an Oct. 7 letter about illegal immigration, I agree that laws should be respected or we will eventually have anarchy. However, I also believe laws should fulfill the purposes that brought about their passage in the first place.
The purpose of immigration laws is to provide work for our own citizens in preference to others. Most Americans want to go to college and obtain jobs with salaries and benefits far greater than what people can earn as day laborers. If this were different, we would see thousands of Americans trying to get these jobs. It is not happening.
In addition, if employers did hire citizens and legal immigrants to perform jobs currently done by day laborers (I do believe the laws should be enforced), the expenses of employers would increase and it would cost more to buy the goods and services the illegal immigrants are providing.
We also have no objections to American businesses relocating operations to foreign countries or using foreign workers to do work Americans could be doing.
Where are the Americans who want to do the work of illegal immigrants, and are they willing to pay more as a consequence?
