In another thread, wlisa mentioned that the schools are in good shape for the next several years...I wanted to address that thought in a new thread (so as to not blend topics on the previous thread).
Let me be blunt...don't count your chickens before they hatch. I know the Governor has pledged to continue providing the aid needed to keep this new school funding formula in place, but unfortunately for him, this is not an monarchy.
First of all, this new funding formula passed by the skin of it's teeth in a lame duck session.
I have heard from several well informed folks that if the vote were held today, there is no way the formula would pass.
Secondly, there is a great deal of grumbling about the amount of additional funding it is going to take to make this formula work this year (approx $534 million) and next year (approx $614 million), and all the cuts to other areas of the budget that have to be made in order for this funding to be freed up.
It's essential to remember, the new school funding formula has passed...the budget that would have to pay for it still has not passed. The governor has vowed to protect this formula and the funding...but again, it's not solely up to him. Once again, in this state, nothing is guaranteed.
