www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080204/NEWS/80204054/1001/NEWSFRONTHOWELL — A meeting regarding the possible closure of the Ardena School is going on now at Howell Middle School North. The public forum is being conducted in the school's auditorium and presented by the Board of Education's Finance Committe. The Ardena School is over 70 years old and is the Howell School District's oldest school. There are 12 schools and over 7,000 students enrolled in the K-through-8th grade district. Howell Middle School North is located at 501 Squankum-Yellowbrook Road.

What I am about to write will not make me any friends in the school system. I know that the people who run our schools as well as the parents who send their kids there have a great deal of pride in our schools, and rightfully so.
When I read an article like the ones posted above, I can not help to wonder why we do not push for a merge with other schools. The reasoning is that the borough is a donut hole district more than anything else. It is absurd that one district is bursting at the seams while just a short distance down the road another is losing enrollment and considering closing one building.
Besides the obvious of easing overcrowding, I cannot help but to wonder if a rationalized system could ease other burdens as well. Ones like dealing with special needs children, ones with disabilities or ones who are deficient in the American language. On the other side, could rationalization also help better serve those kids who are gifted?

Brian...you're right...the idea of merging with other districts in the area has been one that our school district has been tossing around for several years now...but there's always one problem...school districts can not merge unless both sides agree to it, and there has been no interest from any of the surrounding districts to merge with Freehold Boro - for whatever reasons they may have.
There was a movement a little while back to have the state come in and mandate a merge with other districts, but that idea died a quick death as well.
Short of the state mandating this type of a move, I don't see it happening anytime in the near future...and in my own opinion, while our district does some tremendous things, it would benefit our students if we could combine resources with other surrounding districts...quite frankly, it would benefit their students as well.
