Borough officials said they drafted the ordinance in response to complaints that Freehold High School students are parking on streets around Robertsville Road instead of using the school parking lot. "People who live there simply don't have room to park," Borough Administrator Joseph Bellina said. The borough already had established time limits on parking on Robertsville, but students may have been parking beyond the limits despite tickets, school district spokeswoman Ilse Whisner said. "More and more students are gaining or having cars, and the parking spaces in the lots are senior-privelege only," Whisner said. Some juniors who drive may park on side streets off school property, she said. "Legally, there's nothing we (the district) can do about it," Whisner said. The ordinance adopted last week says no vehicle can be parked on the street unless it is owned or operated by someone who lives on the street or has a parking permit prominently displayed. Emergency vehicles and contractor, service and delivery vehicles are excluded from the restriction. The ordinance includes about 220 feet of Robertsville Road near the high school from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.
