Kean choir and chorale to perform in Freehold
FREEHOLD - The Kean University Concert Choir and Chorale will present a concert titled "Festival of World Choral Music" at St. Peter's Church on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. St. Peter's is at the corner of Main and Throckmorton streets in downtown Freehold. The public is invited to attend this evening of music. Admission is free and a free-will offering will be collected to benefit the music ministries of the church.
The combined ensembles of the concert choir and chorale, as directed by Mark Terenzi, will perform a program of world music all sung in original languages. Sacred repertoire includes the first movement of Stravinsky's powerful "Symphony of Psalms," Rachmaninoff 's "Borogoditse Devo," "Simple Song" from Bernstein's "Mass" and Hogan's stirring arrangement of "Wade in the Water." World music selections include Brazilian "Muié Rendera" and Spanish "Cantos Asturianos" with their irresistible dance rhythms, and Mandarin "Prairie Love Song" with flutes.
As the chorale specializes in repertoire written for smaller ensembles, they will perform a cappella madrigals by Vecchi and Morley as well as several compositions representing vocal jazz and contemporary styles. The eight-piece Kean Guitar Ensemble will also be featured in the 75-minute program.
The Kean University Concert Choir and Chorale hail from Union and have achieved increasing recognition for their performances. On tour, the choirs have performed to acclaim in a number of prestigious venues, including Montréal at Chapelle Historique Du Bon Pasteur (2001), Boston's Old North Church (1999 and 2003), and John's Hopkins University in Baltimore where they performed with the Johns Hopkins Choral Society Chamber Singers (2002). The choir and chorale have also performed in Washington, D.C., at the churches of President Bill Clinton (2000) and President George W. Bush (2005). Most recently, they were greeted with accolades at historic Bruton Parish Church in Colonial Williamsburg, Va. (2007).
