FREEHOLD — Police set up a mediation conference between two feuding families and authorities are hopeful that the meeting will lead to a resolution of the problem between the two groups.
"I want to commend both families for their willingness to try to resolve the conflict,'' said Police Chief Mitch Roth. "I thought (the meeting) was very productive.''
The meeting was held at police headquarters Wednesday evening and mediated by police.
The gathering was set up after approximately 15 additional officers - off-duty
borough officers, police from Manalapan and Freehold Township, and members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office -- were called in Tuesday night when a dispute broke out between the families, authorities said.
One man was assaulted on Mechanic Street, and there was another report of a vehicle being damaged by someone with a baseball bat Tuesday, police said.
A Freehold Township woman and a 15-year-old -- who were not directly involving in the dispute between the families - were taken into custody that night after they called attention to themselves while police investigated the Mechanic Street simple assault case, authorities said.
The woman was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest, while the boy was
charged with resisting arrest and aggravated assault after police said he struck an
officer.
The boy received a cut on the inside of his mouth from his braces during the struggle with police, and a detective injured his hand and shoulder while he tried to assist in the arrest, authorities said.
Roth said the dispute between the families began several months ago, and stemmed from a disagreement between juveniles
About eight adults attended Wednesday's meeting, and Roth said he hopes there is now some understanding between the two families.
