FREEHOLD — A 36-year-old borough man was the victim of a robbery Sunday evening, but about an hour later, that man and his friends were arrested for fighting with the accused robber, police said.
The victim told police he spotted the man who robbed him, so he and his friends tried to detain the 20-year-old until officers arrived. But before police got there, a fight between accused robber and the other men broke out in the street, so everyone was taken into custody, authorities said.
Around 5:30 p.m., Jose Juan Carlos Rodriguez, 36, was near the corner of Jackson and Mechanic streets when two men approached him, said Lt. Mark Wodell.
One man asked for a dollar, and when Rodriguez took out his wallet, one of the men grabbed it, stole $40, and then returned the wallet to the victim, police said.
Then one of the men - later identified as Johnny Delaera, 20, of Institute Street in the borough - began to punch the victim in the head, while the other man stole his cell phone and gold bracelet, said Wodell.
The men fled, and the victim reported the robbery to police.
About an hour later, police were called to Park Avenue near Foodtown on a report of a fight.
When Patrolman Eduardo Santana arrived, Delaera was on the ground, but he said he wanted to fight and refused to comply with police orders, said Wodell.
Rodriguez was also at the scene and he told police that he and his friends spotted Delaera and tried to hold him until police arrived, but before they got there, the fight broke out.
Delaera was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and conspiracy. He was sent to the Monmouth County Jail in Freehold Township, with bail set at $52,500.
Rodriguez, Pedro Oroche, 51, and Luis Morales Maldonado, 37, all of the borough, were charged with disorderly conduct. All three were released.
Police are still looking for second man involved in the robbery. Anyone with information about it is asked to call the detective division at (732) 462-1234.
