Last night the Planning Board approved a small parking waiver to allow a new Antique Store to open in the former Renaissance/Brown & Brown (Collins & Smith) building on Throckmorton between Main and South.
An antique store should provide a little more interest for that part of town. It's being operated by a very pleasant woman from Colt's Neck, who bought the building. We all hope she succeeds.
It will, certainly, be tough attracting walk-ins a bit off the beaten path - especially during the week. Therefore, we should all talk up the store; visit it once it opens; and spend a few bucks there if we can. These are the kind of niche businesses we really need downtown. This store brings a new retailer to a small street that sorely needs to be made a little more interesting At the same time, it increases the size of the retail business district, even if only by a tiny bit. This is a good thing.

Hmmmmm -- I have an idea. Perhaps she can print up some postcards (she can go to Marc Pacifici who's printing business, EA Capable, is right on Main, nearby El Meson), and get permission from restaurant owners to place a pile of those postcards nearby the cash register for people to pick up, get interested -- then walk on over. Isn't that the job of the Partnership? To promote a new business in town?

Responding to Fiber - the citizens of Freehold don't attend Board meetings, don't attend Council meetings and after the first few meetings, were not attending the People meetings. If you want to heard, know the facts and participate. There are things that can be done to save money and some of the great programs in the schools. IE have the students raise money for the band, sports activities and other non educational activities. If enough people bring this up, it will get done. That's how we got some of the programs to begin, parent pressure. Also redistricting was dropped and retaining Mr. Jackson were accomplish to a large part because of parents speaking out at meetings. Their are many other examples of things happening because of parent pressure. One person speaking up,does not accomplish much, but a crowd, knowing the facts and offering solutions can accomplish things.

We all know that this shop owner will succeed or fail based on her own business acumen and personal merits. It is, however, impressive that a few of you wish to help her "make it" at that location.
We all know that 50% of all new businesses fail in their first few years of operation. My own business, now 3 1/2 years old, has succeeded (so far) based on the advice and help of some good industry people that I am very grateful to. Without their valuable help, it would have been much toughe for me to survive.
My suggestion is this. When the store opens...stop in and introduce yourself to the new owners. Welcome them to the Borough and strike up a conversation about things they can do to make their business a success in town. After all, we are from here and understand the community better than anyone else can.
In fact, as a grassroots forum, PEOPLE leaders might want to visit our newest businesses and let the owners know that the forum is also a significant network of potential consumers with a great deal of word of mouth. I'm sure they will appreciate this. After all, we want to see this business prosper and serve us as a successful case study for others contemplating opening up shop in FB.

The new store is great news! Please, tell me it is not a dollar antique store.
