In previous threads I have encouraged people to submit their survey to the Recreation Commision. I submitted my ideas that I support. I figured I would share them with readers. If anybody wishes to share their ideas here on the site, that would be great.
1.Skate Park- idea that has been floating around and would be a very nice addition
2. Off leash dog area- These facilities are in high demand and relatively low cost. This is a great way to meet a real need for dog owners. It is also a bonus that these facilities also serve as a community gathering place. where people can meet, make friends and converse. Concerns will be the upkeep of the site from the municipal workers and regulations of the site. Animal control and the police department will have to be aware of what may be needed as far as oversight is concerned.
3. Self- guided bike routes - The recreation commission could do a study and make recommendations that would make our town more bike friendly. Measures could include recommended bike routes, signage and points of interest. By establishing recognized bike areas and routes, recommendations could then be made to town services and ensure that areas are
well maintained. Proper implementation of this program could also encourage residents to ride in and around town more, thus easing traffic and parking concerns.
4. Water playground- A very nice example of this idea can be found at the intersection of Broadway and Ocean Ave in Long Branch. On hot summer days, it is a great place for parents to bring their children to cool off. Adding a facility like this to FB would be a real asset.
5. Down Town Redevelopment – Under the belief that success in down town has to be holistic and complete, recreation needs are something that has to be considered. The recreation commission should be the authority on this aspect and look closely at what transpires. Out door theaters, commons areas, and other measures that enhance the social well being of residents has got to be a part of down town redevelopment.
Arts and Music- In general, we already have a nice foundation in the borough. Between the FCP, Center Players and other events, we certainly have good entertainment. It would be well worth it to continue enhancing the arts in Freehold Borough. The recreation commission could play a stronger roll in bringing these issues out more. We have many very talented people in the borough. It would be great to see more from them. Could we get some sort of Music and Arts Association to bring all of the talent out more? The advantages are that we can highlight the great cultures and people we have here, we could get more entertainment that would naturally enhance and compliment the restaurant industry we have, and it could meet a good solid niche market of people, giving our town added character.
Mentoring/lessons programs- This concept is inspired by the unfortunate troubles the schools have been having with music and arts programs due to cuts in funding and space problems. The Recreation Commission would be an ideal place to put together programs for students to learn and grow in their music abilities.
AS an example, a great program would be one in which volunteer instructors give group lessons to kids who are already learning an instrument. Group settings are very valuable for students so that they can learn how to play with others. Should the program succeed, the kids could show off their skills at various events in town. This program would be ideal at the Court Street School. For a very small fee, it would ensure that students continue to learn a very valuable skill.
Similar programs could be put in place of other art forms such as painting or dance. Consideration could also be made for adult classes or jam sessions.
Due to costs, these types of programs would have to be limited to those students who own instruments. To include new students or those who do not own, there would have to some sort of effort to bring in an outside vendor to provide instrument rentals.
